Prior to 1956, scoring of the modern pentathlon was based on an athlete’s placement in each of the five events.
The modern pentathlon was created by the French baron Pierre de Coubertin (1863–1937), who felt it would stimulate world relations and insure peace if soldiers of the world’s armies could find a mutual interest in friendly competition.
Following the formation of the International Union of Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon (UIPMB) in the early 1950s, annual world championships were organized and the UIPMB became the governing body of the sport.
