Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 & 975X Express Chipset: 65nm is Here - HotHardware
Courtesy of its dual Hyper-Threading enabled execution cores, the 3.2GHz Pentium Extreme Edition 840 was a high performing CPU in many multi-threaded applications, but it was clearly outperformed by AMD's high-end Athlon 64 X2 processors, especially in gaming scenarios where the processor's second core wasn't fully utilized.
With today's official introduction of the Pentium Extreme Edition 955 processor though, Intel aims to close the performance gap between its flagship processor and AMD's.
The Pentium Extreme Edition 955 is also manufactured using Intel's new 65nm process, which lowers the processor's power requirements and makes them less expensive for Intel to produce.

Pentium OverDrive processors were released at speeds of 63 and 83MHz as an upgrade option for older 486-class computers.
The original Pentium microprocessor had the internal code name P5, and was a pipelined in-order superscalar microprocessor, produced using a 0.8 µm process.
The Pentium brand is now used for desktop parts, the Celeron brand is used for "value" parts (typically lower performance and lower price), and the Xeon brand is used for high-performance parts suitable for servers and workstations.

Pentium 4 Extreme Edition vs Athlon 64 FX
While the Pentium 4 EE benefits little from the 2MB L3 cache (2%), the Athlon 64 FX-51 outscores the Athlon 64 3200+ by 10%.
However, the advantage of the extreme edition over the plain processor is again greater in case of the AMD processors: Athlon 64 FX-51 outdoes the Athlon 64 3200+ by 20%, while the gap between the Intel's processors is just 6%.
We can't admit that the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition wins at the difference of 1.3%, especially because the P4 EE wins in half of the tests, while the A64 FX takes the crown in the other half.

Thus, the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.2 GHz is unable to run in multiprocessor configurations, but is fully compatible to all the current motherboards based on dual-channel Intel 875/865 chipsets even without the BIOS update.
Externally, the Extreme Edition differs from the regular Pentium 4 by the greater number of filtering capacitors on the reverse side of the housing.
Intel devised the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition as a response to AMD Athlon 64 based on the AMD64 architecture released on 23 September.

 Pentium Extreme Edition 965 Review
Intel's launch of a new version of Presler, the Pentium Extreme Edition 965 gives us an opportunity to reflect on the history of the NetBurst architecture, of which 965 is the last scion.
The initial Pentium 4, code-named Willamette, launched in late Fall of 2000.
At the time, RDRAM's high throughput was deemed necessary to keep the Pentium 4's 20-stage pipeline fed. Willamette eventually hit 2.0GHz in August of 2001, which also saw the debut of the 478-pin socket.

 Intel Pentium D 820 - Page 1
Alas, that was not the case, and Pentium 4 it remained when Intel unveiled the new core on February 1st, 2004.
Intel used the "Pentium 4" name through multiple core revisions, and now with the new dual core approach, it seems almost fitting that the "Pentium 4" name be dropped in favour of a new label.
With the Pentium D 820 priced at less than half of what AMD's entry-level dual-core part is priced at, Intel could very well be responsible for initiating the dual-core push into the consumer home.

 PCWorld.com - Intel Boards a Faster Bus
Intel is expected to release a faster version of its powerful but expensive Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processor this week, alongside the introduction of a chip set that uses a faster front-side bus to connect the processor and the memory.
The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition is basically the same as the Pentium 4 desktop processor, but it features 2MB of Level 3 cache compared to the 1MB of Level 2 cache on the Pentium 4.
The company recently canceled plans to release a 4-GHz version of its Pentium 4 processor in the first quarter of next year, saying it would increase the cache of Pentium 4 processors to 2MB to improve performance and then release dual-core processors, expected by the end of 2005.

the Pentium Extreme Edition 955, which was Intel's first Extreme Edition processor built using the company's then brand-new 65nm manufacturing process.
The 3.73GHz Pentium Extreme Edition 965 we'll be showcasing here is more than a speed-bump, however.
And in the Pentium 6xx series and 3.73GHz Pentium Extreme Edition review, we detail many of the features of the Prescott 2M core, which has much in common with the Presler and Cedar Mill execution cores.

Based on some reviews comparing the 6xx and 5xx (we could not since we only received an Extreme Edition), in general there is an improvement in performance for applications, but less so for games.
As introduced with the 5xx series, the 6xx and 3.73GHz Extreme Edition are based on the Land Grid Array 775 (LGA775, AKA Socket-T), and has no pins as those are found on the motherboard now.

PCWorld.com - AMD Readies Powerful Desktop Chips
Intel announced last week that it is canceling plans to bring a 4-GHz Pentium 4 processor to market in the first quarter of 2005, and will focus instead on releasing a 3.8-GHz Pentium 4 chip with 2MB of Level 2 cache memory during that quarter.
Intel is expected to make two faster versions of its Pentium 4 Extreme Edition available later this year to carry its performance banner, but those chips are not used in as many PCs as the mainstream Pentium 4 processors.
Part of Intel's decision to cancel the widely expected 4-GHz Pentium 4 processor was prompted by the diminishing returns from engineering investments into scraping an additional 200-MHz of clock speed from the Netburst architecture.

By the way, to avoid extreme traditionalism, we have recently considerably changed the list of tests – a separate article is devoted to this issue.
It's extremely significant that P4 XE 3.43 GHz outscored a higher clocked Pentium 4 660, though the latter also has a large L2 Cache (but its bus is worse – "just" 800 MHz).
The proof of this fact is the result of still second-to-none Pentium 4 eXtreme Edition 3.43 GHz on old Gallatin core.

The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition will run at 3.2GHz and come with 2MB of level-three cache, said Louis Burns, executive vice president of the desktop platform group at Intel.
Intel was able to beef up the caches quickly because the new Pentium 4 is actually the same basic chip as the Xeon MP with 2MB of level-three cache, a chip for multiprocessor servers that has been on the market for months.
The new Pentium 4 comes in a different package and runs at a faster speed, but the two chips are essentially the same, an Intel spokesman said.

Gamers Depot -The fix for your PC needs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
It seems as if Intel is playing a bit of catch-up to AMD with regards to the 64-bit generation by today’s announcement and release of its 64-bit instruction capable P4 CPUs.
The drawback, of course, is that the 2M core has a huge 31-stage pipeline which is great for hitting the higher clock rates, but also means that there are certain slow-downs due to higher latencies associated with branch execution.
Because it uses the newer Prescott core, there’s no more L3 cache on the Extreme Edition, and it also uses a longer pipeline — this means that clock-for-clock it’s not necessarily a faster design.

 [Tweaknews] - INTEL'S 3.46GHZ EXTREME EDITION 1066MHZ FRONT SIDE BUS PROCESSOR & 925XE CHIPSET REVIEW - Page 1
Intel's newest 3.46Ghz Extreme Edition Pentium 4 and new 925XE chipset launch can be summed up easily as the simple upscaling of a portion of the Pentium 4 line from its' long standing front side bus standard speed of 800Mhz to 1066Mhz.
Based on current knowledge which may change shortly, the 1066Mhz front side bus flavor is only being released in the Extreme Edition line of P4s and only time will tell whether it will spread to the newer standard LGA775 processors.
But, on the other hand using the same Mushkin 4-4-4-12 memory will highlight the actual gains from the faster front side bus Extreme Edition instead of a performance increase through a mixture of the tighter memory timings and the faster CPU combined.

Intel introduced their line of Pentium 4's based on the newer 90nm Prescott core a little over a years ago, however with performances that hardly shined against its similarly clocked 130nm based Pentium 4's and had rather high power draws and heat output.
Throughout this period Intel sought to capture the enthusiast space not with the Prescott based Pentium 4's, but with the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, which was essentially a 130nm based "Gallatin" core leveraged from the server range.

THE LATEST AND MOST EXTREME EDITION of the desktop Pentium4 more than triples the transistor count to throw in a whopping 178 million transisors, cramped into a 2 MB Level3 cache.
The main distinguishing feature of the so-called Extreme Edition has been the addition of a whopping 2 MB on-die L3 cache on top of the 8kB L1 cache (+ 12 k µ-ops L1 Execution Trace Cache) and the 512 kB L2 cache introduced with the Northwood core.
With respect to the internal architecture, that is, pipelining and execution units, nothing appears to have changed from the Netburst microarchitecture introduced with the Northwood core, however, the addition of the huge Level3 cache naturally takes its toll on the transistor count and, likewise, on the power consumption.
