The original Klamath Pentium II ran at 233 and 266 MHz, were produced in a 0.35 µm fabrication process and produced (for that time) an incredible amount of heat.
By early 1999, the Pentium III superseded the Pentium II.

Describing the G3 as technically superior to the Pentium II is not quite as serious an error of scale as describing the new Beetle as technically superior to the original, but it's the same basic mistake.
Clearly, the gap between the Pentium II and the G3 is not as big, otherwise the Pentium II would not be in the race at all -- but the generational gap is there, and it's growing rather than shrinking.
Maybe a fairer comparison is with the Mobile Pentium II since, after all, the G3 was always intended for mobile computing.

Pentium II is very good on Quake (due to its next generation floating point unit), it reaches 25 frames per second while the best of the rest, Pentium MMX-200, reaches only 15.7.

Anybody who installs a Voodoo 2 card in a computer with a Riva TNT card is going to have a hard time explaining why, but since it works with the Viper in exactly the same way as it works with everything else, I did it anyway for demonstration purposes.
I, personally, am a big fan of overclocked Celeron processors for home computers, but since they're not quite a plug-and-go proposition, a proper Pentium II 350 is a decently fast and not too pricey alternative for people who don't want to fuss around running things faster than the label says.
Pentium II class processors have to be different, and use one or another kind of mounting rail apparatus, sometimes with a brace out the side as well.

The other thing is that the Pentium II's often run so hot that people put fans over the heat sink (just to be sure), and there are stories of people burning themselves on the heat sinks.
I keep wondering if the next Pentiums are going to have to have liquid cooling (or powered cooling) just to keep them from burning up -- then I remember that active cooling is already options today (many Pentiums have required a fan or special coolers -- and if the fan breaks, your processor burns up).
Personally I like Pentiums they are so bulky and nostalgic, like those Intel guys in iridescent leisure suits dancing to 70's music -- they remind me of the refrigerator sized disk and tape drives, or big 8" floppy disks that I used in yesteryear.

Basically the Pentium II is a more advanced Pentium Pro with its L2 cache running at 1/2 the clock speed which, although is a step down from the clock speed L2 cache of the Pro, gives it the lead over AMD's K6 and Cyrix's 6x86MX.
The core of the Pentium II is much like that of the AMD K6 in that it decodes complex instructions into much smaller and easier to manage RISCops, Intel's version of a RISC86 instruction (they are essentially the same thing).
The Pentium II 350, 400, and 450 will all run using the upcoming 100MHz bus speed present only on the 440BX chipset (nope, not the LX as originally expected) which, along with the 350MHz+ Pentium IIs, will be released in the first half of next year.
