People just don't believe a pragmatic is electible*, mainly because they may say some things that the base..and the voting public at large..doesn't want to hear.
These are people who endorse the idea that "we need a powerful leader to stomp out the rot that is destroying our society." These are the same subset of people who, in another time and place, thought Hitler was an affable, plain-spoken man and a resolute leader.
I consider myself a "pragmatic progressive." I'm also like a lot of people I know and work with--they may despise or worship Bush, but their everyday politics, the stuff that helps shape their work efforts (we're local government planners), is actually quite nuanced and complex, as are the citizens and elected officials we work with.

Like they thought when the Sons were done they could go home, but then we showed up, and since we drove 12 hours they were duly obligated to remain seated and attentive.
He had other people already traveling with him, and as soon as he dropped them off at some ritzy club, he turns back to us, and in a thick Philly/NY accent says, "Those are the worst kind of people you'll ever see." Then he proceeds to charm us all the way back to the hotel.
The band before us got kicked out after their performance because their drummer was so vocally pissed that the audience was only 3 people strong.

The US, through it's CIA and Military have been responsible for ~10 million deaths (murderwise, not by proxy of the poverty they have caused, dictatorships they supported then cut loose, nor the amount of environmental damage and it's resultant effects on the populations).
Yup, the good old US of A. Considering the Iraqi soldiers who were forced to fight by Saddam and who died in the process, it's no wonder that the U.S. is receiving resistance.
i am humiliated that people like you give bad names to americans who have had to lay down there lives so you could have the right to speak your mind and critisize the government like your allowed to.-no rights...you disgust me; what you are taking for granted right now is a sin.

These people have alienated their own capacity - regardless of whether that capacity is a a moral or intellectual one - to see through the liars.
People who feel threatened — more accurately, people who are being threatened — aren’t going to sit down and calmly discuss the people who are threatening them.
similarly, for those of us with some sense of history, it is not forgotten that first slavery and then segregation were defended on the basis of those same “moral values” (and from those same x-tian pulpits) which today are being used to viilify and demonize abortion and gay marriage.
