The Woman Who Fell from the Sky
Its fruit is all that we have to live on." With this remark he gave the young woman who lay there ill a shove with his foot, causing her to fall into th hole that had been dug.
When these were wearied they asked, "Who will volunteer to care for this woman?" The great Turtle then took her, and when he got tired of holding her, he in turn asked who would take his place.
The boy who remained in the lodge grew very rapidly, and soon was able to make himself bows and arrows and to go out to hunt without his bow and arrows.

 History
The values of the culture were embodied in the teachings that were passed on by personal example, story telling and a strong understanding of the importance of respect, cooperation and the necessity of being in harmony with the natural environmental cycles.
These people "who fell from the sky" populated the wilderness and established the rituals and traditions still practised by many Quw'utsun' people.
The elders are the history keepers, an important role for a people who have few other sources of history from a native perspective available to them.

All around me people were on fire, writhing in agony." Sixty years ago today, on March 10 1945, the US abandoned the last rules of warfare against civilians when 334 B-29's dropped close to half a million incendiary bombs on sleeping Tokyo.
The aim was to cause maximum carnage in an overcrowded city of flimsy wooden buildings; an estimated 100,000 people were 'scorched, boiled and baked to death,' in the words of the attack's architect, General Curtis LeMay.
People who dived into rivers and canals for relief were boiled to death in the intense heat.

In the temple of Apollo at Delphi sat a sacred stone that fell to the ground from the sky.
The scientists were forced to admit there was some connection between the fireballs that fell from the sky and the rains of stone.
The observed who has placed the specimen in my hands for examination, stated that the stone fell within a few feet from where he was standing, and that it entered the ground for a distance of about 3 feet.

 Centerfield: The Sky Fell
Most people can manage acceptance and tolerance and accomodation, and that's the way it was trending before the "in your face" activists got on a roll.
People DO have a big problem when they start to get the feeling that thier emotions, beliefs and "acceptance" toward such individuals are being forcibly legislated.
This issue is a lot more important to couples who face uphill battles over child custody, visitation rights, insurance coverage and serious medical decisions than it is to those of us who would rather not see two men kissing.

People in Kecksburg want to resolve what fell from the sky in 1965
It was meteor, photographed by at least a couple earthlings, visible from Chicago to New York State to Virginia, astronomers Von Del Chamberlain and David Krause of Michigan State University wrote in a paper published 20 months later by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
No matter what the case, reporter Kean said, the case is ripe for investigation because it has living witnesses who saw something on the ground and three decades worth of evidence rounded up by Gordon.
The firehouse was open and people jammed the social club, he said.

People in Kecksburg want to resolve what fell from the sky in 1965 (Post-Gazette article, 2003) - UFO Evidence
That was the late afternoon when something -- or nothing -- shot from the heavens over this south edge of Westmoreland County and landed -- or didn't -- in a gully a mile outside of town.
For years, retiree Robert Bitner, former Kecksburg fire chief, a man who believes that something noteworthy fell from the sky, hasn't spoken with his brother-in-law.
People who figure that something indeed hit the ground suggested origins ranging from extraterrestrials to a misfired NIKE missile to a remnant of Kosmos 96, a Soviet probe that was bound for Venus but, according to U.S. Space Command, crashed in Canada 14 hours earlier.

It can be challenging for some people as the elements of the stars move into areas that are beyond the threshold of the logical mind, and swims in water that requires feeling and trust and higher sight.

He literally took care of the Jewish people (food fell from the sky, clouds protected them from the elements, etc…).
This would help prepare the people for the reality in the Land of Israel (and thenceforth), where they would hear prophecy, but the prophets did not have the same clear vision as Moshe.
Similarly, the Talmud would be a bridge between those who had seen the Temple, the Sanhedrin, and other aspects of Jewish life, and those who had not.

Guitarist Jason Everman, a onetime member of both Nirvana and Soundgarden (not that his role in either amounted to anything), is one historical calling card of this misleadingly named big-rocking quintet from New Jersey.
Willing to settle for trying popular sounds rather than seek a compelling personality, Mindfunk — whose third album, People Who Fell From the Sky (made by a new post-Everman four-piece lineup), did not get an American release — never succeeded in surpassing its history.

High Strangeness: When Flesh and Blood Fell from the Sky
The fall of flesh and blood from the sky would generate no small amount of curiosity, even in our technologically advanced society acquainted with air travel.
Understandably, these events sometimes caused consternation among the people, and were often seen as portents of ill luck or doom.
Holland was examined "with two of the best microscopes in the place." All who looked at the samples agreed that it was flesh and blood, but from what was unknown.

Stan Thornton, a residential ceramic tile layer and lifelong resident of Esperance, Western Australia, was on the roof of his home watching when America's space station Skylab fell on his hometown in July 1979.
Shortly after Skylab fell, Thornton's mother directed him to the back yard of their home, where she thought she heard something hit the roof of their storage shed.
When Skylab fell in the early morning hours of July 12, 1979, it was no longer responding to commands from controllers.

Joy Harjo's "Woman Who Fell From the Sky" encompasses many aspects of modern Native American life and, although it reflects a strong sense of her own cultural heritage, is not overtly political.
The author's unique writing style rewards careful reading and re-reading, and, while she chooses heavy themes, she deals with them positively -- weaving pain, human cruelty, joy and love into a tapestry of life which is beautiful and understandable.
I must admit that I usually have a hard time reading poetry (a serious problem for a literature major!), but Joy Harjo's THE WOMAN WHO FELL FROM THE SKY is simply the most moving and eloquent group of poems I have ever read.

As I try to process the awful events of yesterday when Columbia fell from the sky, I keep coming back to the grief-stricken look on the face of Milt Heflin, Chief Flight Director, at the first NASA briefing, when he said:
I understand the risks these people take every day in the pursuit of knowledge, yet I've not really thought of them as heroes.
What these people do -- the dreamers, designers, engineers, builders, programmers, ground-crew, and, above all, astronauts who put their lives on the line -- is important to me.

When William Ryan and Walter Pitman first presented their theory of the Black Sea as a fresh water lake invaded by the salt water of the Mediterranean in a cataclismic event 7,600 years ago, they were laughed at by the scientific establishment to which they belong as marine geologists.
Now this book "When the Sky Fell" about a new idea regarding Ice Ages and the possibility that another legend may be based in truth is so poisonously criticized by some reviewers, that I can't help remembering all those times when the so much vaunted "real" science was wrong.
The book itself, I would recommend, but for crazy people like me who like to have pretty books too, I would recommend looking for a different version, because this one is unimpressive...just because of that, don't overlook its quality in content, but still.
