Archie Comics Publications began their comic empire with both a different name and a different focus.
Pep Comics got its debut in January 1940, and introduced America's first superhero sporting the Stars & Stripes.
Lastly, the Hangman (featured in Pep Comics) received his own book entitled Special Comics in the winter of 1941, which name changed to Hangman Comics (7 issues) and later Black Hood Comics for another 11.

Pep never has any money worries, and he is always beautifully dressed in a variety of sports outfits and school clothes.
Pep tries to learn to bat with his "glass arm", the result of an operation, while forging a career as a baseball pitcher.
Such a crime plot is fairly unusual in the early Pep tales; aside from this tale, he rarely functioned as a detective in plots that were essentially unrelated to sports.

Certain titles relating to comic characters appearing in both comic books and the cartoon media, e.g., Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, are held in the Theatre Collection of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
Although some archival material and a few dozen pieces of original comic book and comic strip art are held, the focus of the collection is on published work, in an effort to present a complete picture of what the audience has seen over the years of the twentieth century.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: The Hangman
This happened in Pep Comics #17 (July, 1941), published by MLJ Comics (which changed its name to Archie Comics a few years later).
Storm, whose other comic book work includes Bugs Bunny and Buzzy, left after four issues, reportedly uncomfortable with the character; and after he left, the elements he was uncomfortable with only got worse — the only thing in Pep Comics more horrifying than The Hangman was Madam Satan.
At first, the title was Special Comics, and he shared it with The Boy Buddies (kid sidekicks of The Shield and The Wizard), but starting with #2, it was called Hangman Comics.

I now have Pep Comics 1-55, 58 and 65 scanned in digital format.
I'm waiting on a guy who's scanning the outer wraps of Pep #15 for me, and then I'll scan the rest of my coverless.
The only one in the first 50 issues I won't have scanned is Pep Comics 07.

Nostalgic for the sales figures of the World War II years, American comic book publishers of the early 1950’s initially treated the Cold War as a “sequel” of sorts to their pot-banging propaganda comics of the previous decade.
Granted, I was still fairly new to the bewildering world of comic book superheroes, but Spidey grabbed me right away....reinforced by the Spider-Man segments appearing on the PBS series "The Electric Company".
As both DC and Marvel Comics transition from one cosmos-shaking Mega-Event to another, it's important for comics fans everywhere to watch for the warning signs of Mega-Event Derangement Syndrome (or MEDS for short).

While some comics creators have been interested in telling stories about the traditional Arthurian figures, others have drawn inspiration from the legend in creating their own characters.

All retailers need to do is mail in the covers with a note explaining which PEP comics they want in return.
PEP exchanges will occur while supplies last, and retailers can roll over PEP credits if they have enough of the months' book.

It's funny to think that a scant 7 issues after the publication of this comic, Pep Comics unleashed Archie upon the world!
Here's a rundown of the characters leading in stories inside: The Shield and his sidekick Dusty, Danny in Wonderland (don't ask!), The Comet, The Fireball, Sergeant Boyle (Irish copper), Lee Sampson - Midshipman, Lucky Larson (a pilot), Kayo Ward (a boxer), Bentley of Scotland Yard (with Cooper art).
P.S. I no longer own this comic, it was sold in March 2003 for $50.
