Indeed, Pepper Adams has one of the most distinctive speaking voices in mainstream jazz as well-it is a gruff, authoritative baritone voice that is frequently punctuated with a gasping laugh.
The young Park Adams III (the name is "a family curse," he says) was on the road at an early age, the family living with various relatives sprinkled around the country before landing in Rochester, New York, where Park was to end up with a clarinet and a new moniker, both acquired in grade school.
Pepper spent his teens playing wherever he could-it was impossible for anyone under 21 years old to play in bars-in order to earn enough money to send himself to college in preparation for a career as a writer-a 'literary type" as he puts it.

Pepper Adams was one of the all-time great baritonists, ranking at the top with Harry Carney, Serge Chaloff and Gerry Mulligan.
But Mulligan overshadowed Adams throughout virtually his entire career, which is a little strange because Pepper had a much different sound (heavier and more intense) than the light-toned and playful Mulligan.
Adams grew up in Rochester, NY, and when he was 16 he moved to Detroit where he became an important part of the very fertile local jazz scene.

Adams, long associated with trumpeter Donald Byrd and one of the original members of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Band, is recognized as one of the very best performers on his particular horn, having won numerous polls in recent years.
Pepper Adams is a rather unlikely candidate for being such a powerful player on such a large horn.
Adams’ tone seemed to acquire more of that characteristic edge the more his horn warmed up and the faster he blew.

Witness the deeply heartfelt, rhapsodic ballad paying tribute to Cannonball Adderley, "Julian" (co-written with Mraz) and the catchy, almost Brubeck-esque "Ad Astra." His group is tight, swinging and empathetic -- they play as a unit, a band, not just a pick-up group.
