  The Infamous Peralta Stones
The stones have been examined by a number of experts in various related fields over the years, but the most careful and pains-taking examination was by Father Charles Polzer, a Jesuit priest and a well-known ethnohistorian associated with the Southwestern Mission Research Center at the Arizona State Museum.
The stone cutter told him that the Peralta Stones were bogus; the lettering and drawing, though crude in appearance, was too smooth and uniform in places to have been done with hammer and chisel.
Peralta became a common family name, and there were thousands of them by the middle of the 19th century.

The "Peralta Stones" are a very interesting find, and, if in fact, they are genuine, could hold the answer to the location of all the Peralta mines in the Superstition Mountains and surrrounding areas.
The "Peralta Stones" where originally discovered in 1949 (some people claim the discovery was in 1956) by a man who has only been fictiously identified as "Jack" while he was on a summer vaction in Arizona with his family.
This stone was the "Horse and Priest Map".

 NYCFilmCritic.com: Stone Reader
His story isn?t a remarkable one?after Stones sunk without a trace, he turned to other endeavors to pay the rent and no longer had time to write?but it is fascinating in its way.
Sight unseen, it would be easy to dismiss Stone Reader as an extended advertisement for an out-of-print book (and if that?s what was intended it worked?Mossman?s novel was put back into print soon after the film?s release), but in fact Stones of Summer plays a minor role in the movie.
Stone Reader may not be technically slick, but it?s still a lovely movie and one I recommend highly to bookworms and documentary fans everywhere.

A descendant of the Peralta family may have led Waltz to the old family mine (or mines).
The mystery of the mines continued in the early 1950s when a vacationing police officer from Oregon uncovered four stone tablets (thought to be at least a hundred years old) in the vicinity of the Superstition Mountains.
Dubbed the “Peralta Stones” the tablets contain a number of intriguing symbols inscribed upon them, including a number of crosses, a figure of a “witch” or a priest, another of a horse, and yet another of a large heart.
