From 8 February to 23 February PERCH was sent several reports concerning enemy concentrations near her area, and was directed to patrol or perform reconnaissance in various positions near the islands of the Java Sea.
Personnel of PERCH were taken to the illegal questioning camp at Ofuna, Japan and then to the Ashio mines, where they were forced to work until the close of the war.
PERCH was credited with sinking a 5000 ton enemy freighter on her first patrol, conducted west of the Philippines.

USS Perch (SS-176) was a Porpoise-class submarine of the United States Navy, the first Navy ship to be named for the perch, a type of fish belonging to the family Percidae.
In the spring of 1939, Perch operated with the fleet on its cruise to the East Coast.

Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Perch, named in honor of the perch, a type of fresh-water spiny-finned fish belonging to the family Percidae.

On February 25 she was directed to go through Salajar Strait and patrol along the 100 fathom curve northeast of the Kangean Islands as part of the force then attempting to defend Java.
Personnel of PERCH were held for a few days on a Dutch Hospital Ship and transferred on March 10 1942 to a prison camp at Makkasser Clebes, Dutch West Indies until found by Brigadier General Barnes on Sept. 13, 1945.

At the end of November 1941, Perch, under the command of Lieutenant Commander David Hurt, escorted the 4th Marine Division, loaded aboard two transports, from China to the Philippines, after which she entered the Cavite Navy Yard.
Clearing the Navy Yard on 10 December (9 December Hawaiian time), Perch was able to observe the destruction of Cavite by Japanese bombers before slipping through the Corregidor minefields and departing on her first war patrol.

In the last week of November 1941, PERCH rendezvoused with two transports off Shanghai to escort the 4th Marines evacuating from China to Manila amid the rising military tension in the region.
The outbreak of hostilities with Japan found PERCH still in Cavite Navy Yard but the work was accelerated on her and we were back in the water on the morning of the tenth.
PERCH performed flawlessly other than minor maintenance defects that were remedied as they cropped up.

The "313-boat" was named after the first USS PERCH (SS-176), which was lost on 3 March 1942 north of Surabaya during the Navy's futile attempt to slow Japanese expansion at the beginning of the war.
Decommissioned on 15 January 1947, PERCH underwent a dramatic conversion at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in the spring of 1948 that would extend her usefulness to the Navy for many years and place her in a new and special role.

In July 1939, two months before the outbreak of World War II in Europe, Admiral Thomas Hart relieved Admiral Harry Yarnell as Commander, Asiatic Fleet, and faced with the growing threat, called immediately for reinforcements.
All eight Porpoise class (P-boats) served during World War II -- three boats were lost: Perch (SS-176), Pickerel (SS-177), and Pompano (SS-181).
The surviving five boats were laid up in reserve in late 1945.
