USS Perch (SS/SSP/ASSP/APSS/LPSS/IX-313), a Balao-class submarine, was the second submarine of the United States Navy to be named for the perch, a rather small European fresh-water spiny-finned fish.
Perch, again classified as a Submarine Transport, APSS-313, on 24 October 1956, departed San Diego 5 November for a reconnaissance exercise in the Panama Canal Area, returning to San Diego 11 December.
Perch was designated an Unclassified Miscellaneous Submarine IXSS-313 30 June 1971 She was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register, 1 December 1971, and Disposition, sold for scrapping, 15 January 1973.

No further transmissions were received by bases from Escolar, but Perch and Croaker recorded intra-ship communications with her until 17 October, when Perch received a routine message from Escolar giving her position and course.
Information supplied by the Japanese on anti-submarine attacks gives no clue as to the cause of her loss, but the Yellow Sea area is thought to have been mined.
Her course as transmitted to Perch does not cross any known Japanese mine fields, but positions of mines laid before April 1945 are not precisely known.

The second Perch (SS-313) was laid down 5 January 1943 by the Electric Boat Co., Groton, Conn.; launched 12 September 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
Coming in close ashore two nights later to disembark the remainder of the party, Perch encountered a 300-ton coastal freighter that threatened to cut off her return to open water.
When she encountered a convoy of two ships, an alert Japanese escort discovered Perch and subjected her to a severe two-hour depth charging which caused considerable damage throughout the boat.

For those of us "Pre-Nuke" submariners who happened as I to study the "PERCH SS 313" in sub-school, no one could have been more surprised than I when I became a crew member during the Korean war as she came through Pearl Harbor on her way back to San Diego after a patrol.
As I was to find out later she was decommissioned in 1947 and underwent a dramatic conversion at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
Note: Perch earned combat pins in both Korea and Viet Nam.
