  USS Perch (SS-313) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Perch (SS/SSP/ASSP/APSS/LPSS/IX-313), a Balao-class submarine, was the second submarine of the United States Navy to be named for the perch, a rather small European fresh-water spiny-finned fish.
Perch, again classified as a Submarine Transport, APSS-313, on 24 October 1956, departed San Diego 5 November for a reconnaissance exercise in the Panama Canal Area, returning to San Diego 11 December.
Perch was designated an Unclassified Miscellaneous Submarine IXSS-313 30 June 1971 She was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register, 1 December 1971, and Disposition, sold for scrapping, 15 January 1973.

USS Perch (SS-176), a Porpoise-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the perch, a type of fish belonging to the family Percidae.
In the spring of 1939, Perch operated with the fleet on its cruise to the East Coast.
In a night attack on a large merchantman off the eastern coast of Celebes, Perch was hit in the superstructure, forward of the pressure hull of the conning tower, by a high explosive projectile which blew away the bridge deck, punctured the antenna trunk and temporarily put her radio out of commission.

Charles Hinman,* the museum’s education director, said the 300-foot diesel submarine USS Perch was discovered in 190 feet of water in the Java Sea by an international team of divers and photographers who were hoping to photograph the wreck of the British cruiser Exeter.
On March 1, 1942, the Perch was on the surface 30 miles northwest of Soerabaja, Java, when it was attacked by an enemy convoy that was landing troops west of Soerabaja.
Two days later the Perch, while on the surface and unable to dive because of extensive damages, was attacked by two Japanese cruiser and three destroyers.

These submarines were extremely large by standards of the day (about three times the size of an S boat), slow on the surface, slow on the dive and difficult to maneuver.
The USS Argonaut, the lone member and the namesake of its class was the direct descendent of the Barracuda Class, devloped principally to serve in the Pacific as a long range mine layer.
These two classes of submarines shouldered the bulk of the combat duties during the early stages of the war, with the USS Tautog (photo) holding the scoring record in the category of "number of ships sunk" (26).

 US Perch (SS-313)
The USS Perch (SS-313) was a Balao class submarine.
Another factor of importance in the Balao class subs was new electronic gear including the ability to better detect targets, to set more accurate torpedo angles using new electric torpedos, and sophisticated equipment to detect certain water layers called thermoclines under which these boats could slip, thus deflecting the sonar pings of enemy ships.
The USS Perch (SS-313) was launched on September 12, 1943 and commissioned on January 7, 1944.

The majority are fleet-type submarines, but a number of older type boats also served, mostly in training and rear-area billets, though many of the S-Boats saw combat, and a number of R-Boats were employed on patrols in low activity areas.
There are gaps in some of the number sequences, either because the boats were canceled before commissioning, or because, while ordered and laid down during the war, they weren't commissioned until after 2 September 1945 and thus did not see actual service during World War II.
