Eastern Freshwater Cod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eastern Freshwater Cod (Maccullochella ikei), also known as Eastern Cod, are a freshwater fish belonging to the family Percichthyidae; they are not a true cod.
Eastern Freshwater Cod are native to the Clarence and Richmond Rivers and their tributaries, which are East Coast drainages found in eastern Australia.
It is feared Banded Grunter may yet invade the main freshwater reaches of the Clarence River system with devestating impacts on Eastern Freshwater Cod.

Percichthyidae sensu Johnson includes Gadopsis (Nelson, 1994; Eschmeyer, 1998), but we have retained this genus in its own family until further taxonomic review of the group (Jerry, et al.
Excluding Gadopsis and its two species, the Percichthyidae is represented in Australia by 6 genera and 15 species (Paxton and Hanley, 1989; Rowland, 1993; Nelson, 1994; Harris and Rowland, 1996; Allen et al.

Temperate perch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name Percichthyidae derives from the Ancient Greek words Perca for 'perch' and ichthyos for 'fish' and translated basically means Perch-like fishes.
Several other Australian freshwater species also sit within the Percichthyidae Family while research using mitochondrial DNA suggests the species of the Nannopercidae Family are in reality Percichthyids as well.
Australia is unique in having a freshwater fish fauna dominated by Percichthyids and allied families/species.

Phylogenetic relationships, hybridization, and biogeography within the Australian pygmy perches (Percichthyidae).
Historically considered part of the Kuhliidae, and subsequently a unique family Nannopercidae, they have recently been included in the Percichthyidae, a decision supported by published 12S sequence data for percichthyids.
This presentation summarizes the results of two companion molecular studies on the group, one using allozyme data at 50 loci to assess species boundaries in the group and population structure within widespread species, and the other examining relationships within Percichthyidae and among basal percoid families using mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data (cytochrome B, S7, RAG2).

Adelaide Aquariums fish information pages: Perches, basses, cods, grunters, pygmy perch and glass perch
Some of the best known Australian fishes are those of the family Percichthyidae, which are variously known as perches, cods and basses, and of the family Terapontidae, the grunters (some of which are also refered to as perches).
Representatives of the families Percichthyidae and Terapontidae are medium to quite large fish with a typical perch-like shape, similar to many cichlids.
They are very closely related to the family Percichthyidae and are placed there by many experts.

CSIRO PUBLISHING - Marine & Freshwater Research   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The taxonomy and evolutionary relationships of six Australian species of the family Percichthyidae have been investigated using data obtained from comparative morphological examination of preserved specimens and from electrophoretic detection of variation in proteins extracted from liver tissue.
Members of the genera Maccullochella, Plectroplites, Macquaria and Percalates form a group of generalized percoid species that have presumably colonized Australian fresh waters from marine origins.
On morphological grounds the group is here considered to belong in the basal percoid family Percichthyidae rather than in the specialized family Serranidae to which it has been previously assigned.
