The purpose of this article, one of a planned series, is to describe the general distribution and native status of 22 lake-dwelling fish species belonging to four families: Centrarchidae, Percidae, Esocidae, and Moronidae.
These four families are mostly water-column dwelling piscivores and insectivores common to warm- and coolwater lakes of the Northeast, and include many of the freshwater fish species best known to the general public.
The Centrarchidae and Percidae also include a number of species that are relatively unknown (to the public), and less often studied.
