The original Mosquito design dated from 1938 but it was not until March 1940 that there was sufficient interest in the aircraft for construction to commence.
The first to fly was the bomber prototype W4050 on November 25, 1940 followed by the night fighter model on May 15, 1941 and the photo-reconnaissance model on June 10, 1941.
Mosquitos were also built by Airspeed Ltd, Percival Aircraft Company and Standard Motors.

Percival's aircraft were noted for their graceful lines and outstanding performance.
Some of these aircraft took their first flight at Gravesend and the most famous were those from the works of Captain Edgar Percival who built his aircraft in a hanger on the airport.
Percivals were flown by many prominent private pilots; there are photos of the famous aircraft used by Beryl Markham and Alex Henshaw, and two of author Neville Shute Norway taking delivery of a Proctor.

The Airspeed AS10 Oxford was a twin-engine aircraft used for training British Commonwealth aircrews in navigation, radio-operating, bombing and gunnery during World War II.
The Oxford was based on Airspeed's commercial 8-seater Envoy III, seven of which had been modified for the South African Air Force as the "Convertible Envoy", equipped with a single machine-gun in a hand-operated Armstrong Whitworth dorsal turret for training air-gunners.
Demand for the Oxford resulted in 8,751 being built by Airspeed as well as de Havilland, Percival Aircraft Company and Standard Motors.

A specialist airport management company, TBI plc, became the majority shareholder in London Luton Airport Operations Ltd in March 2001 when they increased their shareholding by buying shares from Barclays Private Equity and Barclays UK Infrastructure Fund.
It was also an important manufacturing site at which the Percival Aircraft Company designed and built a series of aircraft for both civil and military use - including the famous Mosquito fighter bomber - "The Wooden Wonder", which was built under licence from the De Havilland Aircraft Company.
Another key event in 1986 was the Airports Act that required local authority owners of airports to establish their airports as companies with a Board to manage the business.

Percival Elliot Fansler, son of Newton Olliver and Ella Serena Miner Fansler, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on January 12, 1880.
Percival E. Fansler, Purdue engineer and speed enthusiast, got the idea from this flight to start an airline from one city to another.
At the time, the Air Force was attempting to transport fighter aircraft via truck to isolated locations and to have them make rocket assisted takeoffs from the back of a truck.

This early Bristol Aeroplane company photograph shows the aircrafts original round portholes which were an early recognition feature of this particular aircraft,it appears that although the aircraft never had the dorsal fin fitted the portholes must have been modified at some later date,note also the mudguards fitted to the wheels.
Cierva commissioned the Comper Aircraft company to produce this sporting single seater autogyro at Hooton Park in 1932,fitted with a 85 hp Pobjoy R radial it was flown by Flt Lt Nicholas Comper for demonstrations at Heston and Hanworth on 27.4.33,it did not last long after this however as it was written off in 12.33.
The aircraft was a regular visitor to the Royal Show in Warwickshire and landed at Baginton for its stay.,sadly the aircraft is no more as it was involved in a tragic fatal accident when a seat buckle became entangled in the flying controls during an airshow display at Audley End.

 Percival H. Spencer
Percival Hopkins Spencer was the third child of then 63 year old inventor genius Christopher Miner Spencer.
In 1925, he formed and was president of the New England Aircraft Corporation, in Hartford, CT., which was recognized as New England's largest aero sales and service organization, and was the first to obtain a WACO airplane franchise, starting with the famous WACO Nine.
Chuck Y. Herbst in 1965, and as a team designed the Trident Amphibian which was sold to Trident Aircraft Company, Vancouver, B.C. The name of this aircraft of outstanding performance was changed to Trigull by the owners.

TBI was originally a South Wales property company and moved into buying and operating regional airports by purchasing Cardiff in 1995.
After the war the Percival Aircraft Company moved to Luton and manufactured both military and civilian aircraft.
Unfortunately, the dependency on Clarksons was also the airports undoing and when the company went into liquidation Luton airport suffered accordingly.

These drawings were the work of the late James Hays Stevens,they appeared in 'Air Stories' magazine in 1936 and were the same drawings used to make the 'Skybirds' metal replica in 1=72nd scale.
Mr Stevens was the designer for the Skybirds organisation started by a person called Halliday who produced sets of pre-shaped wooden parts beautifully presented in strung boxes,the company became famous for its string of clubs that were scattered throughout the British Isles.

A brilliant aircraft designed and pilot, Edgar Percival was born in Albury, New South Wales in 1898.
Following service with the Royal Flying Corp during World War 1, Percival operated his own charter company in Australia before returning to England where he was appointed as an Air Ministry test pilot.

G-AEKL Percival Mew Gull which Charles Gardner won the 1937 Kings Cup air race,colours are red with gold trim.
The extensive amount of conversion work is evident here,there appearing to be very little left of the original airframe with a cut down rear decking and what look like new gull wings.

Unorthodox in design, it utilised a wooden structure when such construction was considered outdated and was powered by a pair of Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.
The Mosquito was conceived as a fast day bomber that could outrun all contemporary fighters and hence dispensed with defensive armament, however, due to its speed and agility, it was also used as a fighter.

De Havilland Aircraft Company planned the Mosquito in 1938 as a high-speed unarmed daylight bomber, with the advantage of all-wood construction (at a time when Britain was suffering from a severe shortage of strategic materials).
The prototype - built secretly at Salisbury Hall by a team which grew from 12 members in January 1940 to 30 in the summer of that year - was first flown on 25 November.
Some aircraft were subsequently fitted with bulged bays for a 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) bomb.

With a self imposed target of retaining 70 percent of the Provost's structure, the Percival designers found that modifications of the fuselage to accept a small turbojet engine would be relatively simple.
The rough grey coating on the wing of the aircraft was applied in order to break up the smooth airflow and give an early indication of the onset of a stall.

It was amazing to read of Batten's history on a wall plaque as she's completely unmentioned in our American versions of aviation history.
The Percival Aircraft Company was later known as the Hunting Group and beginning in 1953 produced 330 T.Mk.1 trainers for the RAF.
Hunter was purchased by British Aircraft Corp. in 1960 and closed down in 1965.
