  Amblyopsidae
The Percopsiformes may be remotely related to the codfishes (Gadiformes) and toadfishes (Batrachoidiformes).
These are fishes small in size (less than 20 cm or 8 in) characterized by a mosaic of primitive and advanced characters that include some primitive ones such as adipose fin and advanced ones such as a pelvic girdle located further back from the cranium when compared with most other fishes.
Percopsiformes are found in North America, from Alaska and the Great Lakes drainage to the south and eastern United States.

 Acanthomorpha
Johnson and Patterson (1993) corroborated both of these hypotheses, and they have subsequently been supported in DNA studies (Wiley et al., 2000; Miya et al., 2001).
Johnson and Patterson (1993) used only Percopsiformes to represent Paracanthopterygii, assuming the monophyly of the group following Patterson and Rosen (1989).
Gill (1997) suggested that the morphological evidence for monophyly of Paracanthopterygii is weak.

The order Percopsiformes includes numerous North American oddball fish.

Three new undescribed species of fish have been recovered from the site, one from the family Amiidae, while one new species represents perhaps a new family of the order Percopsiformes.
This important find may provide direct physical evidence linking two fish families, Poeciliidae and Cyprinodontidae, which supports a priori postulations in the phylogenetic literature.
