After the death of the Grand Prince of Kiev Mstislav Vladimirovich in 1132, Yuri engaged in a process of conquering the lands to the south of his domain (hence, the nickname Dolgoruky, i.e Long Arms), trying to subjugate Pereyaslavl (today's Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky) and then Kiev.
During Yuri's reign, the borders of his principality started to take a more concrete shape (especially with bordering Feudal Republic of Novgorod and Principality of Chernigov).
A number of fortresses were built along the borders (Ksnyatin (probably, today's Tver), Dubna etc.) and in the center of Yuri's principality (Pereyaslavl (Pereyaslavl-Zalessky), Yuriev-Polsky, Dmitrov and others).
