Dámaso Pérez Prado, a Cuban bandleader and composer, was born on December 11, 1916 in Matanzas, Cuba.
At the height of the mambo movement, in 1955, Pérez Prado hit the American charts at number one with a cha-cha-Version of "Cherry Pink" (composed by the frenchman Louiguy).
Prado had first covered this title for the movie "Underwater" in 1951, where Jane Russell can be seen dancing to "Cherry Pink".

 VH1.com : Perez Prado : Biography
Prado played the piano, but was often more in his element as the focal point of the audience's excitement; he leaped, kicked, danced, shouted, grunted, and exhorted his musicians with a dynamic stage presence that put many more sedate conductors and bandleaders to shame.
Prado's first U.S. tour came in 1951, with Beny Moré accompanying him; because of musicians' union rules, he was often forced to hire local musicians in place of his Mexican personnel, and train them rigorously in a very short period of time with little knowledge of English.
Prado returned to America for a final concert at the Hollywood Palladium in 1987; although age and ill health had taken its toll on his stage demeanor, the appearance was a sold-out success.

Dámaso Pérez Prado, El Rey del Mambo, was born in Matanzas, Cuba, on December 11, 1916.
Prado's conception of the mambo began to develop in 1943.
Prado, himself, claimed to be unsure about his exact date of birth, but apparently was in the habit of shaving five years off his resume, typically giving it as 1921 or 1922.

It should be noted that Pérez Prado took the Arcaño mambo, superimposing the four by four rhythm of American Swing and turned it into the ballroom dance that became the furor of the 50's.
Pérez Prado was born on December 11, 1916 in Matanzas, Cuba and died in Mexico City in 1989.
In 1947 Pérez Prado wrote the famous mambo song, QUE RICO EL MAMBO, using a jazz band orchestra, restructuring it again with a distinct new rhythm in the sounds of the trumpets and saxophones, with Cuban percussion and developing the melody on top of a base of percussion sequences.

Prado's mambos stood out among the competition, with their fiery brass riffs and strong sax counterpoints, and most of all, Prado's trademark grunts.
Prado was clearly the leader in this movement, but his greatest success came a year later.
Prado's brother, Panteleon Perez Prado, who moved to Europe in 1956, also ran a mambo band and was so infuriated with his younger brother's success that he even tried to sue in court to be declared as the superior bandleader.

In the late '40s Prado set off on his own and quickly became known as the architect of the "mambo" dance craze, and one of the most popular latin american artists in the world.
This is probably the best recent retrospective of Prado's work, although it sticks mainly to his most successful years as a hitmaker for RCA Records in the late '50s.
Prado fans are also strongly encouraged to also check out some of these discs on the Tumbao label...

Damaso Perez Prado was one of Latin music's most inventive bandleaders--literally, as he merged jazz elements with guaracha rhythms, creating the potent concoction known as mambo.
They all owe a tremendous debt to Prado's wild experiments. This album is a little heavy on the treble, so keep that in mind while playing, and set the equalizer accordingly.
Unlike Esquivel's (who used mambo riffs but was not playing mambo per se), Perez Prado and his band, like many other 1950s mambo outfits, can be maddeningly sloppy in rhythm, pitch, and tone.

Xavier Cugat (1 January 1900 - 27 October 1990) was a Catalan-Cuban bandleader who many consider to have had more to do with the infusion of Latin music into American popular music than any other musician.
Desi Arnaz and Perez Prado followed in Cugat's footsteps.
Cugat was born Francisco de Asis Javier Cugat Mingall de Bru y Deulofeo in Girona, Spain.

Cuba's mambo, "invented" (or, better, imported from Congo) by bassist Israel "Cachao" Lopez and by his brother pianist Orestes of the Antonio Arcano's Orquesta Radiofonica with El Danzon Mambo (1937), fused rumba rhythms with big-band jazz, and was epitomized by Damazo Perez Prado's Mambo Jumbo (1948).
Basically, the mambo was a danzon for the working class.
The chachacha was a midtempo mambo figure that, after the 1953 recording of Enrique Jorrin's La Enganadora (1948) and especially Perez Prado's Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White (1955), became a genre of its own, still performed by charangas (unlike the mambo, that was performed by smaller combos).
