Common life modeled on early Church December 21, 1994   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Regarding the essential aspects of consecrated life, the Second Vatican Council, in the Decree Perfectae caritatis, after discussing the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience speaks of life in common with reference to the example of the first Christian communities and in the light of the Gospel.
The Council's teaching on this point is very important, even though it is true that a life in common, strictly understood, does not exist or is greatly reduced in some forms of consecrated life, such as the eremitic, while it is not necessarily required in secular institutes.
It is a question of a unity that has its deepest root in the Holy Spirit, who pours out his love into hearts and spurs different people to help one another on the path of perfection by creating and maintaining an atmosphere of good understanding and co-operation among themselves.

Religious, sought in a privileged way by the Father, are called in turn to "seek God", to direct their desires to the Father, to maintain contact with him through prayer and to give him their hearts with ardent love.
But it is likewise true that interior prayer tends by human nature itself to be expressed and extended in words and gestures, in a series of acts of so-called external worship, whose soul is always the prayer of the heart.
Indeed, we know that contemplatives pray and live for the Church and often obtain for her support and progress heavenly graces and assistance that are far superior to those achieved by activity.

Instruction on Renewal of Religious Formation
For this purpose then, it proposed concrete general criteria, especially in the decree Perfectae Caritatis, by which the religious of today must seriously set about an appropriate renewal that would lead them to a greater vitality and perfection in the life of the Church.
The Instruction insists on the formation of candidates in this ecclesial sense of the religious life, in harmony with the decree Perfectae Caritatis, and the Motu Proprio Ecclesiae Sanctae, and requests that youth be trained to be religious not only for their own benefit, but also for the benefit of the whole ecclesial society.
The preparation for the taking of perpetual vows, with the gradualness and the bonds with which the Instruction concerns itself, should lead the young candidates to a deeper knowledge of the sacred commitments that they are called to assume before God, before the Church and before the world, in dedicating themselves to the religious life.

The symposium anticipates the 40th anniversary of the appearance of the Vatican II document, which was promulgated on October 28.
Perfectae Caritatis called for the renewal of religious life, and the September conference is designed to aid reflection on how religious men and women can be "witnesses to the transfiguring presence of God," explained Archbishop Franc Rode, the prefect of the Congregation for Religious.
After Vatican II, Archbishop Rode observed, religious life saw "profound changes," and congregations of religious undertook "new styles of community life and apostolic service, profoundly modifying their own mode of existence and action in the Church and in the world." The symposium will assess those changes, and reflect on the future of religious life.

There is a section in [the Vatican II decree] "Perfectae Caritatis" that we, as religious, sometimes overlooked: " The purpose of the religious life is to help the members follow Christ and be united to God through the profession of the evangelical counsels.
The first principle of renewal of "Perfectae Caritatis" states: "Since the ultimate norm of the religious life is the following of Christ set forth in the Gospels, let this be held by all institutes as the highest rule."
"Perfectae Caritatis" also states: "It redounds to the good of the Church that institutes have their own particular characteristics and work.

I hope that the fundamental guidelines offered by the Council Fathers at that time for the progress of the consecrated life will also be a source of inspiration today for all who dedicate their lives to the service of the Kingdom of God.
Another basic directive of the Council was to give oneself generously and creatively to one's brothers and sisters, never giving in to the temptation of withdrawal into self, never being content with past achievement and never indulging in pessimism or weariness.

In this Council, the Magisterium of the Church stated theological principles about religious life which are contained in the dogmatic document Lumen gentium and the Perfectae caritatis decree established the criteria for an authentic renewal of religious life.
Perfectae Caritatis had established that, on one hand, it was necessary to maintain sound traditions and, on the other, obsolete elements were to be abandoned.
In the decree Optatam totius, the Church had already given specific indications about priests’ formation and, concerning religious, in Perfectae caritatis, it had stated that "the proper renewal of religious institutes depends fundamentally on the formation of their members."

The norms and spirit to which adaptation and renewal must correspond should be gathered not only from the Decree Perfectae Caritatis but also from other documents of the Second Vatican Council, especially from chapters 5 and 6 of the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium.

Commitment to the priestly ministry is not required by the consecration which is proper to the religious state, and therefore even without priestly ordination a religious may live his consecration to the full.
Then there are lay institutes which, recognized as such by the authority of the Church, have their own proper role by virtue of their nature, character and aim.
These "institutes of brothers", as they are called, do indeed carry out a precise function which is valuable in itself and particularly useful in the Church's life.

Since God is the direct "end" of the contemplative life (the apprehension of and intimacy with God), we say it is superior to external works of mercy, which have other ends (education and physical well-being).
Perfectae Caritatis says that monasteries "are entirely ordered toward contemplation, in such wise that their members give themselves over to God alone in solitude and silence, in constant prayer and willing penance" (7).
Q: In the Nicene Creed the Catholic Church asserts that the Son of God is eternally begotten, but you also assert that the Son of God was born of the Virgin Mary.

 Other Teachings
The Council fathers sensed the winds of change blowing through the 1960s, and set down norms for the adaptation and renewal of religious life in the emerging environment of radical autonomy which is the polar opposite of a life in community with Christ and with His human brothers and sisters.
Perfectae Caritatis is filled with sound guidance for religious orders, but far too many religious communities did not pay heed, and today are paying the consequences in lack of vocations and resources.
As always, God has called into being new orders filled especially with joyful young women who find that living by Perfectae Caritatis brings them the blessings of vocations and rich spiritual life.
