  Performance poetry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whereas poetry readings featured poets reading their printed books for a live audience, some of which were recorded on audio media, performance poets use a different style of writing poetry that is less conducive to print and better suited for their oral presentations.
Performance poets relied more on the rhetorical and philosophical expression in their poetics than performance artists, who arose from the visual art genres of painting and sculpture.
The public performance of poetry became generally restricted, at least in a European context, to the staging of plays in verse and occasionally, for example in the cases of the Elizabethan madrigalists or Robert Burns, as texts for singing.

 What is Slam?
A poetry slam is an event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience.
Of the scores the poet received from the five judges, the high and low scores are dropped, and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30.
Slam is designed for the audience to react vocally and openly to all aspects of the show, including the poet's performance, the judges' scores, and the host's banter.

Each poet gets three minutes, plus a ten-second grace period, to read one poem; if the poet goes over, points will be deducted from the total score--half a point deduction from total score for every ten seconds beyond the grace period (for example, go three minutes and eleven seconds and lose half a point);
The judges' tastes, the audience's reactions, and the poets' performances all shape a slam event, and what wins at one slam might not get a poet into the second round the next time.

Some of the poems encapsulate variations on the theme of going to the precipice of drug addiction and back again, while others rely on a gleaned observational wisdom that poets, at their best, are supposed to impart to their audience.

Poetry performance brings into concrete realization the dimension of language itself: the languageness of language, the wordness of language, the acoustic quality of language, that which exists only in and as language.
When people hear a poet read, they become attuned to the kinds of sounds that that person is producing, which may not be apparent in the printed text of the poem.
But the reading, the performance, is an extension of what the poem is, and vice-versa (the writing of the poem is an extension of what you're doing in the performance of it).
