  Approaches to Performance Testing
Performance testing a J2EE application can be a daunting and seemingly confusing task if you don't approach it with the proper plan in place.
The requirements for the performance testing should be driven by the needs of the business and should be explained with a set of use cases.
Peak-rest tests are a hybrid of the capacity-planning ramp-up-style tests and soak tests.

Beyond performance testing part 1: Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Performance testing is the discipline concerned with determining and reporting the current performance of a software application under various parameters.
Scott is a co-founder of WOPR (the Workshop on Performance and Reliability), a semi-annual gathering of performance testing experts from around the world, a member of the Context-Driven School of Software Testing and a signatory of the Agile Manifesto.
He is a discussion facilitator for the Performance and VU Testing forum on Rational DeveloperWorks and a moderator for the performance testing and Rational TestStudio related forums on QAForums.com.

Performance testing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In performance testing, it is often crucial (and often difficult to arrange) for the test conditions to be similar to the expected actual use.
Performance testing almost invariably concludes that it is the software (rather than hardware) that contribute most to delays (bottlenecks) in processing data.
Performance testing can be performed across the web, and even done in different parts of the country, since it is known that the response times of the internet itself vary regionally.

Performance testing in different environments | testingReflections.com
Testing performance in early builds and in early environments (like a Local environment or a Development environment) can indicate to me possible performance risks that might direct the testing I do later in the project.
I’ve not done that yet because my performance testing tends to be more manual in those environments, but I can envision someone using JUnitPerf or some similar tool to automate that type of analysis with the unit tests.
So a final value in running performance tests early in the Local and Development environments is that it gives me a chance to interface with the developers, in a technical capacity, early in the project.

WHOLE ATHLETE™ - A holistic approach to optimal performance
Also, given that there are multiple LT test designs, and the resulting data are dependent on the actual design of the test, LT has questionable consistency and accuracy in measuring performance.
Testing is a useful benchmark to either depart from on a new training program, or to compare with previous tests after significant training or racing periods.
Since the test is typically shorter and less taxing than performing a time trial, it is a useful periodic measurement of fitness and performance.

In Multistage, performance testing will be used to tune the amount of resources required by large experiments and the amount of time the participants have to wait for the system.
Performance testing will be implemented via the JUnitPerf extension to junit, which is already in use in Multistage as its >unit testing framework.
Multistage has been found to have trouble with handling experiments approaching 100 participants; by tuning the system according to the proposed performance testing, we hope to achieve a measure of scalability.
