Perfume (book) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is a 1985 literary historical horror novel (originally published in German as Das Parfum) by German writer Patrick Süskind.
In the process, he creates perfumes - presumably based on pheromones - that powerfully manipulate human emotions, murdering 25 girls to take their scent.
The book features detailed descriptions of the techniques of scent extraction such as maceration and enfleurage.

Perfume - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils and aroma compounds, fixatives, and solvents used to give the human body, objects, and living spaces a pleasant smell.
Included in the perfume are fixatives, which bind the various fragrances together, such as balsams, ambergris, and secretions from the scent glands of the civet cat and musk deer (undiluted, these have unpleasant smells but in alcoholic solution they act as preserving agents).
As such perfumes are best preserved when kept in light-tight aluminium bottles or in their original packaging when not in use, and refrigerated at a relatively low temperatures between 3-7 degrees celsius.

 PErfume
Set in eighteenth-century France, Perfume explores the evolution of a remorseless killer during an era of intense contradictions, an age in which poverty, filth, and superstition coexisted uneasily with the Enlightenment's ideals of progress, liberty, and reason.
But he is driven to an even greater goal and begins a ghastly series of murders, robbing the most beautiful virgin girls in the town of their scents to concoct a perfume capable of making everyone, even the father of one of his victims, love and revere the wearer.
Perfume is set in eighteenth-century France and tells an extravagant story of a man possessed with a magical sense of smell and a bizarrely destructive obsession.

Eventually he forces his way into an apprenticeship at a failing perfumer, where he turns the business around by being able to come up with new scents that the public goes crazy about (see a feeble attempt at critiquing the pre-capitalist society and the nascent seeds of the spectacle).
The book has the makings of being an interesting story, unfortunately the brilliant language the esteemed critics praised was not present.
For example ten percent of the book is devoted to describing in way too much detail the life of the master perfumer the future murderer studies under.

Perfumers were also known to create poisons; for instance, a French duchess was murdered when a perfume/poison was rubbed into her gloves and was, thus, slowly absorbed into her skin.

Perfume by Patrick Suskind - Book
I beleive that Perfume is better qualified as a "bildungsroman" or as historical fiction rather than fantasy as it draws upon many truths and tells a disturbing yet none the less a beautiful story that is completely within the historical context.
While I am unsure as to whether 'Perfume' qualifies as a fantasy novel it must be said that it is an absolutely brilliant story, able to capture the reader from the word go, as well as being quite unlike any story I have ever read before.
Perfume, the story of a murderer, is a tribute to the mind and imagination of Patrick Suskind, who so wonderfully combined all of the elements needed to sustain a great story.

In the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift-an absolute sense of smell.
As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs.
But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and frest-cut wood.

This book tells of the acquisition, the rebuilding and the occupation of the house by 'Madame'; more than that it depicts the very life of Provence, its exasperations, its smiles and its charm.
The book, telling of Sir John and Lady Fortescue's life in Provence, also gave tantalising glimpses of what had gone before and, finally, after Sir John's death, Lady Fortescue wrote the full story of her life and most particularly of her meeting and marriage with John Fortescue.
You must read the book to understand the difficulties under which it was written and the changes in tense, sometimes in the present and sometimes in the past, her work for France always taking precedence and causing the book to be lain aside for months at a time.

Steven Wu's Book Reviews: Perfume (Patrick Suskind)
People stank of sweat and unwashed clothes; from their mouths came the stench of rotting teeth, from their bellies that of onions, and from their bodies, if they were no longer very young, came the stench of rancid cheese and sour milk and tumorous disease.
Suskind lavishes words on the scents and stenches of 18th-century France; the level of detail that he pours forth is remarkable both for its volume and for the apparent lack of repetition.
While Perfume for the most part stays well within the realm of plausibility, the conclusion of the novel is something of a mess.

In leisurely, aristocratic measures soaked with irony, PERFUME unfolds the gruesome, picaresque allegory of an olfactory genius-monster--a murderous perfumer of decadent eighteenth-century France.
Flawlessly written and drenched in irony, Perfume tells a haunting tale of a man reminiscent of the Phantom of the Opera, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast (beast), and even Faust.
Perfume is a bizarre tale, but it is also lyrical and hypnotic--almost a fairy tale of terror.
