We decided on the Perhentians, particularly Perhentian Kecil as it's cheaper and there was supposedly good snorkeling on the north end of the island.
I was on the opposite side of the island, a ten-minute walk through the jungle on a cleared path to a nice secluded beach.

There are no roads on the islands only a few jungle tracks and so all the places to stay are ringed around the coast, with transport largely by boat.
Coral View Island resort is well named, a fully fledged coral 'house' reef sits just metres off the sandy beach, featuring superb snorkelling opportunities with the outside edge of the reef suitable for shallow 4-6m dives.
On the first two days we dived on the islands the visibility was a disappointing 4-6m, but still with some wonderful sights and animals to be seen.

Despite my doubts, I have to admit that my first glimpses of the Perhentian islands were pretty breath-taking.
The island itself is rather small, there are a couple of walks that take you to the other parts of the island, but I found the best beach to be on Pasir Panjang.
However, I was disappointed to discover that most of the corals around the island have since been destroyed by speedboats, by too much human contact (and abuse) and general lack of environmental-consciousness by both the resort/restaurant owners and tourists.

Then we got on the boat and as we rounded the island, the sea was so crystal clear that you could see the coral and fish from the boat - we spotted turtles and a manta ray, it was amazing.
We stayed initially in simple wooden huts on Perhentian Kecil on Long Beach and then moved over to Perhentian Besar and stayed in the upmarket Perhentian Island Resort for the last couple of nights (a/c bungalows, swimming pool etc).
I actually preferred Perhentian Kecil - the clientele were younger and it was just more fun, cheaper restaurants etc. I'm not too bothered for few days about whether I have air con, hot water etc but if you prefer to have that, there are a couple of air conditioned places on Kecil (small island).

Perhentians are relatively undeveloped with only a few more upmarket resorts (none on the scale or standard of Langkawi however).
Perhentian has changed a lot since then, and I noticed that most of the lower depth sea corals has died or in great danger of dying.
In terms of accomodation, Perhentian Island is slightly more expensive than redang as most foreigners prefer to stay there as its more peaceful and laid-back.

One British girl spoke for us budget travelers, "We bought tickets to the island; were we meant to swim?" It was useless, but the budget travler is ever on the lookout for fleecing and many become downright hostile in their relations with locals.
She hadn't traveled to an island so far from the mainland, nor had she been surrounded by so many Western people.
The islands are still lovely, but I'm sure they were more lovely 1 year ago and still lovlier 5 years ago.

We're staying on Perhentian Besar (Big Island) in some really nice chalets looking out over the white sand beach and crystal clear turquoise waters, and about 700m across the bay is the second of the two islands, Perhentian Kecil (Little Island).
At one of the later stops we were swimming past a coral shelf when Helen spotted a shark swimming ahead of her, but by the time she'd recovered from the shock and called me over, it had long gone.
The sharks around the island are Reef Sharks about four or five feet long and are extremely timid, so it wasn't until the last stop at Shark Point that I managed to catch sight of a few as they darted between the rocks.

Do be warned, travelling to the islands off season can be dangerous (very choppy waters) and most of the accommodation on the island are closed anyway, leaving those that are open, usually very full.
First boats leave for Perhentian around 8 am and the last boat from the island is at 4 pm and 5 pm from the main land.
