Bryn Mawr Manuscript 21: Explore: Pericopes
This pericope recounts the birth of Christ and the adoration of the Magi.
A pericope is a short passage of writing; the owners of MS 21 probably used these pericopes as daily meditations.
Please click on the pericope you wish to view the translation and transcription for, or click on the "student commentary" link to read about the historical role of each pericope as it relates to the manuscript.

Upon the close of the church canon, after the Council of Carthage in 397, and other synods, the reading of uncanonical books (such as writings of the apostolic fathers) was forbidden, with the exception of the legends of the martyrs on their memorial days.
The lectio continua, or the reading and exposition of whole books of the Bible, remained in practice till the fifth century, and the selection of books for the different parts and services of the church year was left to the judgment of the bishop.
The reading of the pericopes belongs properly to the altar-service, and must keep its connection with the church year; preaching belongs to the pulpit, and may extend to the whole compass of the divine word.

Pericopes of Henry II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Folio 117r of the Pericopes of Henry II, Reichenau, c.
The Pericopes of Henry II (Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 4452) is a luxurious medieval illuminated manuscript made for Henry II, the last Ottonian Holy Roman Emperor, made c.
The manuscript, which is lavishly illuminated, is a product of the Liuthar circle of illuminators, who were working in the Benedictine Abbey of Reichenau, which housed a scriptorium and artists' workshop that has a claim to having been the largest and artistically most influential in Europe during the late 10th and early 11th centuries.

An Evaluation of Stephen Patterson's The Gospel of Thomas and Jesus
Synoptic twins are pericopes found in the Gospel of Thomas and the synoptics which have extreme similarities.
Nonetheless, despite minor difficulties and irrelevant arguments, I feel that the overwhelming number of similar pericopes in which a primitive core saying or topic is embedded in different contexts in the final versions of the gospels supports Patterson's thesis that the Gospel of Thomas is not literarily dependent on the synoptics.
He supposes that these pericopes were late modifications of the text, instead of just a part of the Thomas tradition from the beginning.

As an example, Matthew and Luke's versions of the Beatitudes are in a different pericopes: Matthew's is set on a mount (Matt.5.1-12), and Luke's on a plain (Luke.6.17-26), and though there are overlaps between the content, the organization within individual pericopes are still clearly distinct.
Because every verse of every Gospel is represented in some pericope, as a consequence the source from one Gospel sometimes includes transition material that's not germane to the incident in question, but doesn't fit elsewhere.
An example might be the parable of the mustard seed (Pericope 81), with sources from Matthew 13:31-32 and Mark 4:30-34.

 Table of Gospel Parallels
In the arrangement of Aland's Synopsis the numbered pericopes are often repeated so as to give a continuous series of references in canonical order for each of the four gospels.
Thus for example, pericopes no. 121 and 135 are identical except for the difference in bold type.
The pericope is then repeated as 135 with bold type for Luke, because Luke has the pericope after the parable of the sower.

It is valuable to determine where these parallels are, and how the pericopes relate to each other.
After the text has been translated, pericopes defined, outlines settled upon, the next step will be to simply work through the vocabulary of each epistle.

Jacobson assumed, for instance, that the use of the LXX, or the polemic against John the Baptist was late, and so traced the history of individual pericopes on this basis.
He felt this could be done because the original wording and—more importantly—order of Q can still be discerned behind Matthew and Luke.
Working from these assumptions, he believed that one could determine redactional interests in Q in three basic ways: 1.the isolation of late alterations, form critically, to indivdiual pericopes and the coordination of these alterations into patterns.

One set criss-cross point by point within paired pericopes, the other set follow the opening and closing pericopes as they progress in tandem chronological sequence.
If these two pericopes are indeed intentionally linked in the ways suggested here then the message would appear to be that the one who had power over the spirit world  is now overturned to suffer in the same way the power of domain of the dead against him.
Just as the leper’s disobedience to the command to silence resulted in the thwarting of Jesus’ plan to be found throughout the villages of Galilee, so the inverse disobedience of the women who remained silent raises the possibility that Jesus was not, after all, found in Galilee as planned.

 THE SYNOPTIC QUESTION
There are certain data relating to the triple tradition (pericopes that all three synoptic gospels have in common) that are best explained by postulating that Matthew and Luke independently used Mark as a source.
Another reason for the tendency of Markan pericopes to be longer than their parallels in Matthew and Luke is that Mark is characterized by redundancy.
In some cases, pericopes in Matthew and Luke are almost identical, as seen above, while in other cases a two pericopes are so different that one is hard pressed to justify the postulation of a relation between them.

As we shall see in upcoming paragraphs of this article, Jesus instructed his disciples in regard to which sections of their scriptures (the existing Jewish scriptures) were true and which were false pericopes.
They considered such scriptures to be false pericopes composed by the fallen priesthood.
While his instruction on how to separate the true from the false pericopes in the Torah is certainly important, Jesus' giving of entire new gospels is far more important.

Jewish-Christian Relations :: Removing Anti-Jewish Polemic from our Christian Lectionaries: A Proposal
Fortunately, the John 8:46-59 discourse did not include the most severe condemnation in John 8:44, "You are descended from your father, the Devil!" The most problematic of the "historic pericope" texts are the use of the passion account in John and the John 8:46-59 discourse.
It is noteworthy that the most problematic texts in the "historic pericopes" are from the Gospel According to John, a favorite within the "historic pericopes," as the selection of the Johannine form of the passion account indicates.
There are 19 selections that are blatantly anti-Jewish in the Lectionary for Mass that were not in the "historic pericopes."  This statement by James brings us face-on with what is called the 'Synoptic Problem'
The thrust of this argument is that many of the various pericopes (i.e., narrative or literary sub-units) occur in the same order within the Synoptics, even though there does not seem to be any thematic or 'internal' clues/connections (e.g., chronological, locale, topical) that would suggest such an order.
As far as the working of the individual pericopes is concerned, nearly all (if not all) could be explained by oral tradition.
How great their concern was for precise reportage is suggested by their agreement in the words of the heavenly voice in the pericope analyzed above (tn: Mr 1.9-11, Jesus' Baptism): seven of the nine words are identical (77.78 percent).

The 30 pericopes of (2), the Galilean ministry, are also in basically the same order, though there are a few places where either Matthew or Luke individually departs from the order of Mark and the other synoptic.
Turning to consider the matter of order within pericopes, there are many minor cases of divergence.

The term was used in the opening verse of the Gospel of Mark.
It signified that the prefacing of the account of Jesus' death and resurrection with a string of passages or pericopes covering his earlier ministry was a way of proclaiming the good news.
The unintended result was that the term became a designation for the literary genre which was created by Mark's gospel, and it came to be applied to other works of the same genre.

Internal Evidence That the Gospels Are Authentic
The chief assumption of form criticism is that the Gospel writers found these pericopes in oral tradition, where, through many retellings, they had settled into a small number of traditional forms with certain stereotyped features.
Whereas form criticism concentrates on the building blocks of the Gospels, redaction criticism studies the glue, as it were, that holds them together.
It attempts to identify the touches of the final compiler, or redactor, as he molded the pericopes into a continuous narrative.

A pericope is generally a self-contained episode, story, or section of a larger unit, oftentimes discernable in the LDS edition of the King James Version by paragraph markings (¶).
Since reading the scriptures piecemeal—verse by verse or in chapters only—can harm the integrity of the overall text and allows readers to take an important passage out of context, reading the scriptures in sections provides a ready way of seeing how a verse or group of verses fits into the text before and after it.
Occasionally, for instance, a pericope may bridge chapters and include only the first part of a verse while the next pericope begins in the second part of the same verse.
