Roughly 12 hours later, at 17:48 UT, SMART-1 had its first perilune passage.
This first burn in a series of EP firings, lasted 108 hours and ended on 19 November 2004 at 17:48 UTC.
The calculations include a scheduled manoeuvre in the night of 1/2 September to raise the perilune by 600 m in order to maximise the chance to impact at the nominal perilune.

ESA Portal - Last ion engine thrust puts SMART-1 on the right track for its Moon encounter
The same thrust will allow the spacecraft to progressively fall into the natural sphere of attraction of the Moon and start orbiting around it from 13 November, when it is 60 000 kilometres from the lunar surface.
SMART-1 will reach its first perilune (initial closest distance from the lunar surface) on 15 November, while the ion engine is performing its first and major thrust in orbit around the Moon.
After that it will continue orbiting around the Moon in smaller loops until it reaches its final operational orbit (spanning between 3000 and 300 kilometres over the Moon’s poles) in mid-January 2005.

In difference to the previous Clementine mission, which mapped the lunar surface globally at low resolution, LunarSat will achieve high resolution images of the south pole region and other selected areas of scientific interest like lunar domes, rilles, and volcanic features.
The proposed elliptical orbit with a perilune near the lunar south pole gives resolutions of 3.5m /pixel at 100km perilune and better than 10m over most of the southern hemisphere, which is ten times better than the resolution of the Clementine UV-Vis camera.
Another major difference to the Clementine mission is the phase angle of the lunar orbit.

 Clementine Project Information
The first part consisted of a 5 hour elliptical polar orbit with a perilune of about 400 km at 28 degrees S latitude.
After one month of mapping the orbit was rotated to a perilune of 29 degrees N latitude, where it remained for one more month.
This made the planned continuation of the mission, a flyby of the near-Earth asteroid Geographos, impossible.
