 Classical Period in Music
Music historians, however, use the term to mean a specific style and period in music history, roughly 1750 to 1825, that followed the baroque era and preceded the romantic.
The rococo left its mark on music in the form of light and delicate textures, profusely ornamented melodies, and an elegant sentimentality; it is often referred to as the style galant.
The classical period in music coincided with two important developments--the emergence and spread of public concerts and the emancipation of the musician as an artist.

The music is broken down into two categories, church music and secular music.  Church music was fairly simple and was designed to beautify the liturgy through music.  Gregorian chant is a prime example of medieval church music.  Secular music of this period was also simple, but was the repertoire of poets and troubadours.
Century period consists of the time period from around 1900 to the present.  The music from this period is characterized by a definite break in the aesthetic of the music being created.
The desire to produce something different from what is traditionally defined as classical music was the catalyst for this break.  This period perhaps has the most change to contend with-changes in technology, the new popular music being produced, global communications and the ability to readily record music.

In music, we use classical to describe a style, and specifically to describe a period of history from approximately the last half of the eighteenth century through the first decade of the 19th Century.
For although Haydn brought to music a highly distilled, efficient and dramatic style, Mozart would add immeasurably to the style, and the two composers in a synergistic exchange of creative energy and ideas created musical treasures that we still admire and enjoy.
Yet, for a brief moment, the rationalism of the day that permeated musical expression and musical form was a dynamic force which enabled the musicians to articulate ideals of symmetry and balance in highly efficient and satsifying musical works.

It is no coincidence that this period was one of keen interest in classical antiquity; most of Gluck's 'reform' operas, composed at the beginning of this period, are based on classical subjects.
In music it is more often applied to the early 20th-century movement, led by Stravinsky, which revived the balanced forms and clearly perceptible thematic processes of earlier styles to replace what seemed the increasingly exaggerated gestures and the formlessness of late Romanticism.
