periodic, sporadic, intermittent, occasional, fitful These adjectives all mean recurring or reappearing now and then.
In technical use, periodic means “at regular or predictable intervals,” as in the Periodic Table of the Elements.
Often, however, periodic is used to mean “occasional, intermittent.” This usage can be confusing for readers who are accustomed to the narrower sense of the word.

Exercise 2.3 - Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) Reaction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Periodic acid is an oxidizing agent which breaks the C- -C bond between two adjacent hydroxyl groups.
The advantage of periodic acid lies in the specificity of its oxidation.
Thus, glycogen, starch, and cellulose contain dialdehyde groups after the periodate treatment and are left in the cell in insoluble forms which can then be treated with Schiff's aldehyde reagent to form a purple colored product.

As we move down a group in the periodic table the effective nuclear charge is essentially unchanged while the principal quantum number increases, resulting in an increase in the atomic radius.
From left to right across a period the shielding by the inner electrons remains nearly constant while the number of protons in the nucleus increases, causing the atomic radii to decrease.
Nonmetal oxides are usually covalent and most are acidic in aqueous solution with strength of the acid increasing as the oxidation state of the nonmetal increases.
