Periphrasis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Periphrasis, like its Latin counterpart circumlocution, is a figure of speech where the meaning of a word or phrase is indirectly expressed through several or many words.
In linguistics, periphrasis is a device by which a grammatical concept is expressed by a phrase or standard idiom, instead of being shown by inflection, derivation or the use of non-content words.
The so-called compound tenses and all the modal expressions in English, as well as the passive voice, are periphrastic too.

Periphrasis may be used on purpose, especially in writing, as a means of creating anticipation, through delay.
Periphrasis was more common in earlier centuries, where the writing and speech was far more 'flowery'.
Periphrasis can also be used to generate a form of pun, by substituting uncommon words, or word phrases, for simpler ones.

For just as in music the so-called accompaniments bring out the charm of the melody, so also periphrasis often harmonises with the normal expression and adds greatly to its beauty, especially if it has a quality which is not inflated and dissonant but pleasantly tempered.
A hazardous business, however, eminently hazardous is periphrasis, unless it be handled with discrimination; otherwise it speedily falls flat, with its odour of empty talk and its swelling amplitude.
But our parenthetical disquisition with regard to the use of figures as bearing upon the sublime has run to sufficient length, dear Terentianus; for all these things lend additional passion and animation to style, and passion is as intimately allied with sublimity as sketches of character with entertainment.

Periphrastic structures apply circumlocution (which is the general meaning of periphrasis) to grammatical functions such as the genitive and comparison.
Both these functions can be signaled by morphology—that is, by inflectional endings (the table’s finish, the handsomer actor)—but with the periphrastic, English employs a function word construction instead: the finish of the table (with of and occasionally other prepositions, such as for, in the periphrastic genitive; see also

This means that whatever stage in the development of a given periphrasis or grammaticalization has been reached, there will always be at least one corresponding item in the language where the same f-structure information will be derived from an autonomous lexical entry.
Periphrasis can be seen as the syntactic limit case where the requisite form is imported from what is often considered a separate module, namely the syntax (Matthews 1991: 219-221).

The type of approach that I will use in analysing the process will be the variationist one, because I am not just describing the periphrasis in a particular moment of time (for which a traditional approach would do) nor trying to find out what transformational rules provoked the change.
I must bear in mind that the introduction of the periphrasis with a future value was surely done before it first appeared on a text.

The periphrasis style is hardly possible on any considerable scale without much use of abstract nouns such as "basis, case, character, connexion, dearth, description, duration, framework, lack, nature, reference, regard, respect".

This term became a periphrasis for God; whether it could have been reckoned as a separate person, as in Christian Trinitarianism, is a matter of debate.
The risk involved with making Wisdom/Word an independent deity was too great for the rabbis to speculate further, but Christians found in the Wisdom tradition an ideal categorical conception within which to place the person of Jesus.
Within Judaism, the 'hypostatization' of Wisdom or Torah did not seem to undermine monotheism, since ultimately it was a kind of periphrasis used to circumvent the implication of direct contact between the transcendent God and the creation.
