JUVENILE GRAY JAY PREYS UPON MAGNOLIA WARBLER
A juvenile Gray Jay (Perisoreus canadensis) was observed to capture, kill, and eat a healthy juvenile Magnolia Warbler (Dendroica magnolia), demonstrating that Gray Jays depredate free-flying birds in addition to nestlings and dead adults.
Predation of birds, which was manifested in a recently independent bird, may be a regular feature of Gray Jay biology.
The Gray Jay (Perisoreus canadensis) is characteristic of the boreal and sub-alpine forests of North America, but many aspects of its behavior and ecology remain poorly understood.

Avhandlingar från Uppsala universitet : 3384 - The Nepotistic Parent; Predator Protection, Kinship and Philopatry
Yet, the offspring of at least three percent of all bird species postpone dispersal and forego independent reproduction.
The Siberian jay, Perisoreus infaustus, is such a species where some offspring are philopatric and remain in their natal territory for up to three years, forming family groups.
The main finding of this thesis is that nepotistic anti-predator behaviour displayed by parents provided philopatric offspring benefits, which could be an incentive to stay and forego independent reproduction.
