Apparatus for colonic and intestinal irrigation - Patent 4518382
In the present preferred practice of the invention, a mechanical indicator of peristaltic action is mounted in the tube which conveys liquid to the cone inserted in the stoma of the patient.
Peristolic action in the intestine tend to move fluid in the opposite direction to that of the fluid being injected, and the pulsing effects of the peristaltic action causes the ball to move in a fluctuating manner in a direction opposite to the flow of irrigating fluid toward the stoma cone.
Since this action tends to move the colon contents toward the stoma, the result is waves of resistance to inflow from tube 16, until the peristaltic action builds up to a point where it causes waves of backflow through tube 16.

After basal peristaltic activity had been recorded for a 30 min period, the drugs to be tested were added to the bath, i.e., to the serosal surface of the intestinal segments, at volumes not exceeding 1% of the bath volume.
Since the motor action of indomethacin became maximal within 10 − 15 min and was sustained (Figure 1), it was possible to record its concentration-response relationship in a cumulative manner at 15 min intervals (Figures 2 and 3).
When the peristaltic waves remaining in between the nonpropulsive contractions were evaluated it was seen that indomethacin led to a concentration-dependent rise of PPT and the residual baseline pressure (Figure 3A,B) and to a quantitatively minor reduction of the amplitude (maximal pressure) and maximal acceleration of the peristaltic waves (Figure 3C,D).

Peristaltic Pumps-Not Just for Labs Anymore
One of the fastest-growing types of positive displacement pumps on the market is the peristaltic pump, but many people are unfamiliar with the technology behind this type of pump and its advantages.
Peristaltic pumps also are very popular in sensitive process applications where maintaining sterility and preventing contamination may be important.
This makes peristaltic pumps suitable for handling a variety of fluids, from sensitive cell cultures to industrial solvents, and allows the same pump to be used in multiple applications simply by changing the tubing.

The peristaltic pump operates by compressing a plastic tube between an element attached to a rotor and the internal wall of the pump case or housing.
Fluid in the tube is forced from the inlet side of the pump toward the discharge by the squeezing or compressing motion of the element on the rotor of the pump as it rotates.
This peristaltic action is in some ways similar in nature to that of the human digestive tract.

Bulk-producing agents cause the stool to be bulkier and to retain more water, as well as forming an emollient gel, making it easier for peristaltic action to move it along.
Glycerin suppositories work mostly by hyperosmotic action, but also the sodium stearate in the preparation causes local irritation to the colon.
These stimulate peristaltic action, and can be dangerous under certain circumstances.

Peristaltic action is caused by the tire pressing against the peristaltic part of the tube along the tire periphery during tire rotation.
The peristaltic action pushes the air from whole tube into the reservoir part and causes an increase in the pressure inside the tube.
Since in this experiment the peristaltic tube and the reservoir part had the same volume as in experiment one we would be able to inflate the inflatable equipment until the pressure inside the inflatable equipment would be equal to maximum pressure from experiment one.

Specifically, where a peristaltic pump is used, this invention recognizes that the necessary fluid pressure information for a dual mode device can be obtained by alternately monitoring fluid pressure in the patent I.V. tube upstream and downstream from the moving zone of occlusion.
Upon engagement of the device with the I.V. tube, a peristaltic means in the device is positioned against a portion of the I.V. tube to sequentially squeeze the I.V. tube and produce a moving zone of occlusion along the tube for pumping fluid therethrough in accordance with the peristaltic action.
In the alternate embodiment, a gauge assembly 64 is positioned at the upstream end of the peristaltic fingers 42 and a second gauge assembly 66 is positioned at the downstream end of the peristaltic fingers 42.

The simultaneous decrease in the amplitude of the peristaltic waves was most likely a sequel of the frequency rise induced by the drug, given that an increase in peristaltic frequency due to doubling of the luminal perfusion rate attenuated the amplitude of the peristaltic waves to a similar extent (n=5; data not shown).

Peristaltic filling machines have long been used in the Pharmaceutical Industry because of their extreme accuracy on very small volume fills as well as their ability to avoid cross - contamination in multiple fluid paths.
However, larger, industrial capacity peristaltic pumps are also available for certain higher volume and/ or higher viscosity applications that can justify their use (and cost).
Dripping is virtually eliminated by the inherent capillary action of the fluid path as well as a partial reversal of the pump at the end of each fill cycle.

It is due not only to inactivity of the intestines, but to an irregularity of the peristaltic actions, giving rise to the great characteristic, constant ineffectual urging to stool, and when the stool does occur it is incomplete and unsatisfactory, as if a part remained behind.
While the constipation of Nux is due to irregularity of intestinal action, that of Opium is due to absolute inaction of the intestines, a regular paralysis of the peristaltic movement.
In Nux, as,we have seen, this is due to irregular peristaltic action, while with Lycopodium it is due to a constriction of the rectum.

Although better than being constipated, the use of these herbal laxatives is not necessarily recommended, as more research suggests that although natural, these purgative herbs are habit forming like pharmaceutical laxatives, and they do not restore the colon¹s independent ability to function properly.

However, for many today, this peristaltic action has diminished, and that leaves the colon dependent on more food waste to force through what it is already holding.
