Welcome to the Best of New Orleans!
Peristyle's copper bar, the back bar, and most of the floor tiles survived the smoke and water damage and remain as relics for the wistful.
But she forgave Peristyle its lighter, cleaner renovations because, she said, "the food is so good and the people so dear." It was her third time back since the re-opening.
It is the multiple layers of loyalty demonstrated by the regular Friday night barstool diner, Kearney's reverence for each minced shallot and every reduced sauce, and the artful reminder of the framed glass door that was shattered last November by three hits of a fireman's ax.

As Peristyle's co-owner and marquee talent, Anne Kearney Sand was, despite taking the reins while still in her 20s, a throwback: A skilled technician with a respect for tradition, an affection for her ingredients and a firm belief that the bold-faced name on the menu should have intimate involvement in the preparation of your dinner.
Peristyle may not be what it was, but its new owner has maintained its rank among the finest restaurants in the city.
Peristyle's service may be more casual than it once was -- I waited almost five minutes in the foyer one night before a staffer appeared -- but with new faces mixed with the familiar ones, the crew is sweet-tempered and well-informed.

 THE POMPEIAN HOUSE
From the 2nd century BC onwards, the colonnaded peristyle, derived from the wealthy houses of the Hellenistic cities, was assimilated in the primitive Pompeian domus.
The peristyle, with sixteen marble Ionic columns supporting the inner margins of the roof and forming an arcade, was in the form of a garden (virdarium) with flower beds, statuary, fountains and water basins.
The lararium, or domestic sanctuary, in the form of a small temple is incorporated in the atrium, in an adjoining chamber, or in the peristyle.

 Peristyle - History for Kids!
The earliest peristyle courtyards that we know of were in Greek houses, beginning around the Classical period.
Peristyles were also common in wealthier Roman houses, all over the Roman Empire, beginning about the time of the Julio-Claudian Emperors.
The columns that go all the way around the outside of a temple are also a peristyle, so a temple that has them, like this one from Paestum in southern Italy, is called a peristyle temple.

Peristyle gets its name from the colonnade in New Orlean's City Park, which is replicated in a 9-foot by 13-foot mural in the restaurant.

A bronze statuette of Bacchus and a satyr and a small statuette of Bacchus riding a leopard attached to a bronze lampstand were found in the portico near the peristyle.
If we accept the idea that the peristyle was built at the same time as the atrium, it would be hard to account for this oversight of a view from this room, given the importance that is given to sight lines in almost all other rooms of the house.

This type of house, as the term describes, is based around the atrium, a central courtyard in the front of the house off of which the main rooms branch, and a peristyle, a garden in the rear of the house.
Between the atrium and the peristyle, is one of the most important rooms of the house, the tablinium.
The peristyle is positioned perpendicular to the atrium, and should be "one-third wider than they are deep." (VI.c.III) Within, the colonnade should be equal in height and breadth with not too much space between columns.

 TCA Journal Excerpts (5)
When the peristyle replaced the hortus in the second century b.c., architects took care to continue the axial view to its back wall, locating the peristyle whenever possible on the fauces-atrium-tablinum axis in order to extend to the maximum the long view from the entryway.
Because the parcels of land acquired by the owner for the addition of the peristyle were irregular, a regular plan was impossible: there was no way to center the peristyle on the domus's axis.
The secondary axis along the western peristyle shows how important the cult of the ancestors was to the owner (he even had the exedra sheltering the altar (3) decorated to imitate a venerable rural sanctuary), and the axis of the triclinum calls attention to its great size (the largest in Pompeii).

 The Garden
To the Romans, the peristyle was a ‘mini-paradise.’ It was a garden court that was surrounded by a covered, colonnaded walkway.
As the atrium was located in the front of the house and was the hub around which several rooms were located, the peristyle garden was the center of the back portion of the house, being surrounded on all sides by dining rooms, bedrooms, and other spaces.
A remarkable aspect of the peristyle garden was the use of pools and fountains.

The villa was a single-story building, centred around the peristyle, around which almost all the main public and private rooms were organised.

The primary axis is the (slightly bend) line that passes from the atrium, tablinum, peristyle and the great basilica (coinciding with the path visitors would follow), while the thermal baths and the elliptical peristyle with the triclinium are centred on separate axes.
