  Frances Perkins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1933, Roosevelt appointed Perkins as Secretary of the Department of Labor, a position she held for twelve years, longer than any other Secretary of Labor and making her the first woman to hold a cabinet position in the United States (thus becoming the first woman to enter the presidential line of succession).
Following her tenure as Secretary of Labor in 1945, Miss Perkins was asked by President Harry Truman to serve on the United States Civil Service Commission, which she did until 1952, when her husband died and she resigned from federal service.
Following her government service career, Miss Perkins continued to be active as a teacher and lecturer at the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University until her death in 1965.

George Clement Perkins (August 23, 1839 – February 26, 1923), was a U.S. Republican politician, who was the fourteenth Governor of California from January 8, 1880 to January 10, 1883 and a United States Senator from 1893 until 1915.
Born in Kennebunkport, Maine, Perkins was married to Ruth Parker.
Perkins is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California.

Perkins was a member of rock 'n' roll's fabled "Million Dollar Quartet." He, Presley, Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis met for an informal jam session in the 1950s that was later released as an album.
Perkins was in a near-fatal accident that killed his brother in 1956 and was felled by a series of strokes at the end of his life.
Perkins' high-water mark came when he was part of the Million-Dollar Quartet at Sun Records with Presley and Cash and Jerry Lee, gathered around a piano for songs that never made it to the record stores.
