When Perkins Bacon Fell From Grace
Perkins Bacon, a name still familiar in stamp collecting, was one of the first preeminent printers of postage stamps, dating to the Penny Black of 1840.
The Perkins Bacon firm's fall from grace occurred in August 1861 when J.B. Bacon presented Ormond Hill, cousin to Rowland Hill who created the first postage stamp, with six sets of postage stamps which were shared among friends, including Rowland Hill.
Curiously, Bacon shows a complete ignorance of the issue in a letter to Pearson Hill when he wrote, "We do not see the culpability of our conduct, especially considering the gentlemen to whom the impressions were furnished." Bacon had used a special "CANCELLED" obliterator to void all the stamps.

Perkins, remarkable for skill in mechanics, and deep knowledge, for the time, in the management of steel, its carbonization and decarbonization, had come to the same conclusion as the English artists, viz: the importance of the introduction of the highest development of the commercial art of the day.
Perkins, and a description of his method of reproducing the finest engravings, and their application, is worthy of another chapter.
Perkins may be wronged, when the deep thought, the careful analysis, and frequent experiment, is not sufficiently dwelt upon and lauded, for he not only made the egg to stand on its end, but accomplished what the artist world of France and England deemed an impossibility.

The mass of the stone point, according to Perkins, is a integral part of the mechanics, resisting acceleration, causing the back of the dart to travel faster than the front, thereby compressing it like a spring.

Linking Thinking (continued)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Perkins (1990) has indicated that by being involved in the process of being open to new possibilities and to actually making connections, students are encouraged to engage in that type of activiy more and so resemble the creative experts whose tendency is to be creative because that is what they enjoy.
As Guilford indicated (Parnes,1967) “creative education aims at a self-starting, resourceful and confident person, ready to face personal and interpersonal and other kinds of problems...” In approaching problems, Perkins suggests that, “the core challenge is to deal with a maze of ambiguities and forge a new unity”.
With this there are “patterns of thinking” (Perkins, 1990:419-20) such as an openess to possibilities and a tendency to bring opposite thoughts into “new syntheses”.
