Perltop is a *nix desktop environment written in Perl/GTK.
Yeah, it seems like it would be too slow to me too.

Via genehack, I found PerlTop, a filesystem browser written in Perl.
He wonders if it would be slow, so I tried it and it doesn't seem any worse than Nautilus.
