The oblast covers an area of 160,600 km², and as of the 2002 census the population is 2.82 million.
Neighboring oblasts and republics are (from north clockwise) Komi, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, Kirov Oblast and the Autonomous district of the Komi-Permyaks.
