The University of Texas at Austin (full official name), often UT or Texas for short, is the flagship institution of The University of Texas System, the largest public university system in Texas, established in 1883.
The University of Texas was originally conceived in 1839, when the Congress of the Republic of Texas set aside land for a "university of the first class" in the new state capital, Austin.
The University is home to the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum [1] and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center [1].

The university library proper, of 163,000 volumes and 40,000 pamphlets, is housed in the Historical Societys building, in which are also the collection of the Historical Society and that of the Wisconsin Academy of Arts and Sciencesa total in 1910 of 404,000 books and 202,000 pamphlets.
The Federal land grants, however, which ought to have supported the university, were sacrificed to a desire to attract immigrants, and the institution fo.r many years was compelled to get along on a small margin which rendered extension difficult; and the university permanent fund was soon impaired for the construction.
Paul Ansel Chadbourne (1823-1883), a graduate (and afterwards president) of Williams College, became presidentin 1867, and in his presidency (1867-1870) the university was reorganized, a college of law was founded, co-education was established and the agricultural college was consolidated with the university, a radical departure from the plan adopted in most of the Western states.
