		Pernell was born May 18, 1928 in Waycross, Georgia to Pernell and Betty Roberts.
		Pernell was deeply disturbed by the segregation practices he saw in South Georgia; leading him to become actively involved in civil rights and equality issues.
		Pernell often complained that the plots were not complex enough and that women and minorities were not given more equal roles on the show.

		Roberts came to prominence playing Adam, Ben Cartwright's firstborn, in the TV series Bonanza.
		Roberts continued to act but was not highly visible again until the early 1980s when he starred in the long-running television series Trapper John, M.D. Guest appearances by Roberts included the role of Hezekiah Horn in the Young Riders episode "Requiem for a Hero," which won a Western Heritage Award in 1991.
