Perotin's "Sederunt principes," is a wonderful example of the usage of rhythmic modes, as the duplum, triplum, and quadruplum(upper three of the four voices) all utilize them.
Perotin took this style of copula organum to another level with his "Viderunt omnes." Both the "Sederunt principes" and the "Viderunt omnes" have the unique distinction of being written in four parts-organum quadruplum.
Perotin was considered the best discant composer of his time, and because of his additions of compositional ideas, his works led to the possibility of alternate texts, which in turn enabled the origins of the Motet to develop.

Pérotin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Perotin composed organum, the earliest type of polyphonic music; previous European music, such as Gregorian and other types of chant, had been monophonic.
He pioneered the styles of organum triplum and organum quadruplum (three- and four-part polyphony); in fact his Sederunt principes and Viderunt omnes are among only a few organa quadrupla known.
His works include the four-voice Viderunt omnes and Sederunt principes; the three-voice Alleluia, Posui adiutorium, Alleluia, Nativitas, and nine others attributed to him by contemporary scholars on stylistic grounds, all in the organum style; the two-voice Dum sigillum summi Patris, and the monophonic Beata viscera in the conductus style.

It is now believed that Perotin may have been born around 1170 or 1175, began to compose around 1190, and likely died after 1220.
Perotin’s compositions exhibit extraordinarily clear structure, which he managed to obtain by using the same rhythmic phrases repeatedly.
It was in fact Perotin who for the first time wrote polyphony not just for two voices, but for three and even four.

Perotin was one of the great composers of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.
During the time of Perotin florid organa was often replaced with discant clausulae, and old clausula were replaced with substitute clausula, which contain new rhythmic motives.
Before Perotin the upper voices of a multi-voiced organum were composed individually with respect to the tenor line.

Comment: Perotin was a 12th century composer in Paris at the Cathedral of Notre Dame.
Perotin (which is a diminutive of Peter) is described by a mid-thirteenth century student identified today as Anonymous IV who states that Perotin was the greatest composer of discant and better than another composer, Leonin, who came before him (it's not even 100% clear that they were at the Cathedral of Notre Dame).
Perotin composed organum--multi-voice compositions which move quickly over the traditional Gregorian chant which has been stretched out so that each note is very long.

Anonymous IV states that Perotin extended and edited the work of Leonin in the Magnus liber organi, and among other things that he took what was a two-voice style of writing and developed it into three- and four-voice polyphony.
Although Perotin is not believed to have been alone in this undertaking, his is the most prominent name associated with what was a seminal event in Western music.
Perotin is known for regularizing the structure of organum, introducing new elements of planning, and ultimately removing it from its improvisational roots.

Perotin's compositional style is distinguished, for me, at least in contrast to the other steps in this erratic journey, by three things.
The long title quintet is vaguely reminiscent of Perotin, but Perotin's drones have been replaced by moving bass parts that anchor the structure by hovering around its base checking the tent pegs, instead of merely biting down on the tether and then standing still.
The implicit debate between Perotin and Tallis on the balance between ornamentation and narration of holy texts is quickly rendered moot here when you realize that Part has not written a work based on the Passion, or set an excerpt of it, he's set the whole thing, John 18:1-40.

In the 11th century counterpoint was introduced, notably at the monastery of St Martial, Limoges, France, and in the late 12th century at Notre-Dame in Paris (by Léonin and Perotin).

The title of this review may be considered a little over the top by some, but I would defend my enthusiasm.
Organum, by the way, is the name of one of the two styles in which Perotin wrote, the other being Conductus - the inlay notes explain both of these so I won't spoil the surprise if, like me, you are an ignoramus regarding such matters.
Overall, this CD deserves to be listened to, not only by every human being who has ever liked early sacred music, but by anyone with an echo of music in their soul.
