Hello Brian, it sounds like you have a case of Perpetual Check or as you say, you go a rook down.
If you continue to administer check so that the position is repeated three times in a game, you or your opponent can claim a draw.

Can it be possible for perpetual check to occur if their are other moves for the fl to prevent his king from being checked??
