 Perry Robinson Biography
Earl Robinson (died 1991) was an important composer in the realm of folk music and was an associate of Pete Seeger, Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie.
Perry felt that Tony Scott had the biggest sound on the clarinet, a significant aspect of technique, especially in relation to competing with saxophones, trumpets and trombones.
It is notable that Robinson uses the French method of clarinet playing known as "double embouchure" that involves the placing of both the upper and lower lips on the mouthpiece, as opposed to the more common single embouchure that uses the lower lip and the upper teeth.

Jazzdimensions - Perry Robinson plays the US - by Matt Snyder
The United States recently experienced a 'first': the clarinettist Perry Robinson and his Quartet played a short tour, doing several gigs in New York (including a showcasing appearance at the 'Vision Festival'), one in Philadelphia and a stellar performance at the venerable 'Deer Head Inn' by the Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania.
Robinson was excited to provide Adams with old lyrics he had forgotten about for his composition "The Traveler" (from a 1977 release), and the group's intense yet pastoral delivery of the tune was a highlight of all their performances.
Robinson's music has taken many forms over the course of his long career, but even he admits his group has reached a new peak of creativity and originality.

An unsung hero of modern jazz clarinet, Robinson and his quartet stretch parameters and challenge structure, yet languish in tradition.
On the title track, delicate call and response between Robinson and the band leads to solid swing, while "Perry's Troika" contrasts startled flutters informing a lilting melodic line and a hard bop bridge, with darker clarinet and piano with German inflections.
Robinson nods his head to his hero, bassist Henry Grimes, for "Henry's Dance," a good swinger in the older-styled tradition, with Nabatov's honky tonk-sounding spinet creating an arresting sound.
