  Persecution
Persecution is particularly relevant to catastrophic millennialism, the belief in an imminent cataclysmic transition to a collective salvation.
Persecution strengthens catastrophic millennial beliefs, hardens the boundaries drawn between "us" and "them," and causes millennial groups to become caught up in violence that may be initiated either by the believers or by outsiders who assault them.
In such cases, persecution serves to weaken a group that is already suffering from internal stresses, and thus might motivate believers to resort to violent actions to preserve their religious goal.

Thomas's big mistake was to be persecuted by a faction rather than by official state authorities such as the army or secret police.
Persecution, according to the restrictive interpretation, can only be carried out by a government or - a recent concession in some asylum countries - by some other "state-like" authority.
A March 1995 UNHCR information note addressed to the member states of the European Union stated: "Persecution that does not involve state complicity is still, nonetheless, persecution." To someone unacquainted with the non-state issue, this might appear to be stating the obvious.

Do religious people stereotypically have a "persecution" complex? - PbNation
I think there is real persecution going on in places for various religions, but I think it may be that mostly is dependent on the "rulers"/authorities of the area, and their use and abuse of religious beliefs.
Also, the persecution complex comes from the loose use the word/term and that is always something to watch out for.
But the persecution complex is used to fuel a lot of movements not just religous, but also race and social ones as well.

In some ways, Western Christians speaking of "persecution" is almost an insult to those around the world who have truly suffered for their faith.
Those who have been imprisioned, shunned by families, starved, refused any but the most menial work, or who have been killed for their faith, those who must meet in secret to hear about Christianity, must be amused by our stories of "persecution" which amounts to little more than inconvenience and bad press.

These conservative religious wingers have no concept of what persecution for their religious beliefs is. No one is stopping them from praying, from attending church, reading their Bibles, etc. No one is knocking on their doors to haul them off to prison or killing them for practicing their faith.
The scary thing is that I’ve noticed that some in the rank-and-file–the ordinary Evangelicals whose actual beliefs are often much less conservative than their leaders–are starting to unconsciously internalize the persecution complex and eliminationism that has become so typical of their leaders.
