 Medium Tank M26 Pershing
The M26 Pershing was the culmination of the T20 series of test vehicles.
Although not standardized until March 1945, Pershings had been sent to the European Theater of Operations as T26E3s with the Zebra Mission in January 1945 (along with equipment including pilot models of the 155mm GMC M40 and 8" HMC M43).
M26 was armed with the same 90mm gun as the M36 tank destroyer, and the GAF engine in the M26 was essentially the GAA of the medium tank M4A3 redesigned to present a lower height, even though M26 weighed almost 26,000lbs (12,000kg) more than M4A3.

Predecessor of the M48, the M47 is a descendent of the M26 Pershing Tank.
American tank crews discovered in combat that the Sherman was badly outclassed by German medium and heavy tanks, most notably the Mark V Panther and the Mark VI Tiger.
The Pershing tank was soon reclassified as a medium tank, and while it didn't have time to make any real impact in the Second World War, it served with distinction in the Korean War alongside the M4A3E8 Sherman.

 Move on! - Introduction
At the same time, the US Tanks Destroyer units were not able to accomplish in many occasions their theoretical task, so the Sherman tankers had to face the very dangerous job to fight against superior tanks.
Despite the fact that the US tank loses were much higher than expected, some officers were even reluctant to upgun the Sherman with the 76 mm gun, which had better armour piercing performance but worse high explosive capacity, as the British did in their Fireflies with the 17 pdr.
The Pershing was the grandfather of all the "Patton tanks series", the tanks used by the Americans and some of their allies during more than fifty years.

Review: Tamiya 1/16th scale radio controlled M26 Pershing tank
Scale detail fanatics like to paint their tank tracks, which is fine for the static model versions of these tanks, but not practical for anything that's going to drive on a surface more abrasive than carpet.
The Pershing comes with quite a lot of solid metal bearings; they go in the road wheel and support roller assemblies, so that nowhere is an all-plastic wheel riding directly on a metal axle and slowly wearing away.
While the Pershing isn't immune to drive system damage caused by foolish blundering through coarse gravel or thickets of sticks, if you drive it with care, there's not much in the way of garden terrain that it won't be able to conquer.

The GHQ tank battalions were supposed to be heavy tanks attached to the infantry divisions and would be used to make breakthroughs and penetrate fortified lines.
This lack of faith was well founded; the GHQ tank battalions had never been provided with a heavy tank to perform their mission properly, and the infantry and the tank battalions had never been trained to work together.

The M26 Pershing had a slow and ardous beginning, when the need for a heavy tank was not in the priorities of the US Army.

The M26 Pershing would later be reclassified as a Medium Tank and become the blueprint for tanks such as the M46, M47, M48 Patton and M60 Main Battle Tanks.
