Decker, for his part, is justifiably furious, both at the humiliation of Kirk taking his command away on a personal whim—made all the harder when witnessed by Decker's old flame, Lieutenant Ilia (Persis Khambatta)—and at Kirk's disingenuous "for the good of the mission" explanation for the action, which it's not certain the admiral himself believes.
Kirk's intentions are good, but the lengths to which he'll go to get his old ship back—sabotaging Decker, and gambling the success of a mission to potentially save Earth—are disturbing.
