Persona Movie: Persona DVD is available from Bestprices.com
PERSONA is an intense and unsettling study of the symbiotic relationship between Alma, a nurse (Bibi Andersson), and Elisabeth (Liv Ullmann), an actress who has mysteriously lost the power of speech.
PERSONA is considered one of Ingmar Bergman’s greatest cinematic accomplishments and should not to be missed by anyone seriously interested in film.
PERSONA opens with a sequence of disassociated and disturbing images--a nail is driven into someone’s hand, an animal is slaughtered, a boy is seated in front of the gigantic projection of a woman’s face.

Persona’s return engagement at Film Forum (starting this Fri., Jan. 19) amounts to a reintroduction to Film as exciting as when Persona first appeared and perplexed the movie world.
Persona uses the simple situation of an actress, Elisabeth (Liv Ullmann), who has stopped speaking, and the nurse, Alma (Bibi Andersson), who is assigned to attend her recovery.

 persona
It’s difficult for any review to do justice to Igmar Bergman’s most personal and mind blowing film, "Persona." It is quite simply one of the most sublime, profound, and poetic films in the history of cinema.
"Persona" was originally released in 1966 in Europe and in 1967 in America.
The script for "Persona" was specially written to capitalize on the likeness of the two magnificent lead actresses.

Persona (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Persona was made shortly after Bergman's own brief experience with psychoanalysis and the film's structure mirrors the phases of the patient-doctor relationship that define the pscyhoanalytic experience.
Persona criticism is therefore often colorful, incorrect, filled with gymnastic rationalizations and explanations of the narrative, and, typically, not particularly illuminating.

Maybe the movie would have proved entertaining had it left Dr. Sobol on the film’s periphery, but then it wouldn’t be the highly bankable sequel that it is. And as we all know, Hollywood always chooses cash over quality.

"Persona" is the equivalent of cinematic poetry, and like many poems, it relies on striking visual imagery and symbolism to convey its meaning (or meaninglessness) rather than the conventional, linear narative of most films.
Persona is a film which explores the psychological nature of identity, despair, the inner quest for individualism, and more importantly the philosophical theme of existence.
While literally dozens of scholarly papers on aesthetics and film studies have successfully explored the imagery in Persona, such on-screen representations of emotional and psychological turmoil on the part of the main characters should not be missed.

Perfecting Your Personas   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In most cases, personas are synthesized from a series of ethnographic interviews with real people, then captured in 1-2 page descriptions that include behavior patterns, goals, skills, attitudes, and environment, with a few fictional personal details to bring the persona to life.
A good persona description is not a list of tasks or duties; it's a narrative that describes the flow of someone's day, as well as their skills, attitudes, environment, and goals.
Once you have the critical design information, add just one or two personal details, such as what your persona does after work (she goes home to watch old movies with Claude, her cat), or what personal touches there are in her workspace.

Open-ended movies are generally more throught-provoking and demanding of their audience: in the case of this movie, the higher the demand, the more frustrating the experience.
Bergman's various cinematic jolts and quirks, including several allusions to the possibility that this is a story within a story (or so it may seem once images of stuttering celluloid begin appearing), take us further away from the central narrative, which left to itself makes no sense anyway.

The final shot pans around to expose the crew and equipment making the movie, a self-reflexive gesture, as in the later A Passion (1970), which suggests that not even filmmaking can completely dissect the mysteries of the human heart.
