Personal Identity [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The persistence question, the question of what personal identity over time consists in, is literally a question of life and death: answers to it determine, insofar as that is possible, the conditions under which we survive, or cease to exist in the course of, certain adventures.
...a physiological criterion of personal identity is false.
In fact, Descartes' own view that personal identity is determined by "vital union" relations between pure Egos and bodies, with the persistence of the Ego being regarded as sufficient for the persistence of the person but the person not being wholly identifiable with the Ego, could be a weakly reductive view of persons.

John Locke > The Immateriality of the Soul and Personal Identity (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Both in his discussion of personal identity and in his discussion of the immateriality of the soul in Book IV of the Essay Locke is agnostic about the immateriality of the soul.
In this chapter on identity, Locke is also making a distinction between consciousness and the soul, but that distinction is not crucial to the resolution of the kinds of problems that Boyle considered in his essay on the resurrection.
In section 12 of the Chapter of Identity and Diversity he raises the question: “…if the same Substance which thinks be changed, it can be the same person, or remaining the same, it can be a different person.” Locke's answer to both of these questions is affirmative.

Personal Identity (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Your individual psychological identity is a property (or set of properties), and presumably one that you have only contingently: you might have had a different identity from the one you in fact have.
Necessarily, a person who exists at one time is identical with a person who exists at another time if and only if the former person can, at the former time, remember an experience the latter person had at the latter time, or vice versa.
Then we can say that a person who exists at one time is identical with something existing at another time if and only if the first is, at the first time, psychologically continuous with the second as she is at the second time.

The username you choose, the details you do or don't indicate about yourself, the information presented on your personal web page, the persona or avatar you assume in an online community - all are important aspects of how people manage their identity in cyberspace.
The desire to lurk - to hide completely - indicates the person's need to split off his entire personal identity from his observing of those around him: he wants to look, but not be seen.
There are personalities that want to show and not receive too much by using web cams or creating web pages; to receive and not show too much by lurking or web browsing; and still others who want to dive into highly interactive social environments where both showing and receiving thrive.

Locke on Personal Identity (Kevin Anderson)
Locke’s handling of substance and of person seems clearly to imply that a person is a substance of a certain kind, and he often says as much, outright; this implies that to continue to be the same person is to continue to be the same substance; yet Locke flatly denies this.
Flew attacks Locke’s thesis that “x at time two is the same person as Y at time one if and only is x and y are both persons and x can remember at time two what y did, or felt, or what have you, at time one.”  He attacks this view in two ways.
Noonan defends “Locke’s account of personal identity against three well known objections.”  Two of these objections are ones made by Shoemaker and the other one is made by Flew in a different article from the one cited above.

Therefore, he is quite willing to accept the question of identity as a paradox (all possible answers are implausible), as long as he can slip the question of survival (which seems to him the more critical) past the paradox, hidden under the cloak of the theory of descendant selves.
The bodily identity theory would declare that the brainless (and presumably dead) original body was the only resulting person, and the placement of halves of the brain in two other new bodies is irrelevant.

Weirob wants an alternative theory of identity that: (a) provides a means for surviving the death of her body; and (b) does not yield a contradiction or absurdity.
At this point, everyone's assuming there are only two possibilities: the source of personal identity is either the brain (the seat of psychology) or the body.
Thus, the source of personal identity is not the brain (i.e., it is the body).

Identity theft is when someone uses your personal information to commit fraud or another crime, posing as you.
Unfortunately, while a victim is trying to re-establish their good credit, as a result of having their identity stolen they may be denied credit, turned down for a loan or a job, not be able to obtain insurance, have student loan or tuition assistance applications denied, personal property seized and even be wrongly arrested.
The FBI reports that the average loss for victims whose identity was stolen and misused was approximately $4,800, and it cost victims on average between $500 - $1,200 and took them at least 30 hours to rectify the situation and repair their credit.

 Aspects of Identity
Identity orientations refer to the relative importance that individuals place on various identity attributes or characteristics when constructing their self-definitions (Cheek, 1989).
The development of the Aspects of Identity Questionnaire began with the selection of items from Sampson's (1978) list of identity characteristics that were judged to represent the domains of personal and social identity (Cheek & Briggs, 1981, 1982).
Psychometric analyses indicated that certain items originally scored in the social identity category (e.g., "Being a part of the many generations of my family") were tending to cluster on a third factor representing communal or collective identity.

 Of Personal Identity
But self or person is not any one impression, but that to which our several impressions and ideas are supposed to have a reference.
The first is our present subject; and to explain it perfectly we must take the matter pretty deep, and account for that identity, which we attribute to plants and animals; there being a great analogy betwixt it and the identity of a self or person.
It follows, therefore, that the thought alone finds personal identity, when reflecting on the train of past perceptions, that compose a mind, the ideas of them are felt to be connected together, and naturally introduce each other.
