Personal luxury car - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A personal luxury car is a highly styled, luxurious automobile intended for the comfort and satisfaction of its owner/driver, sacrificing passenger space, cargo capacity, and other practical concerns for the sake of style.
Personal luxury cars are usually, though not necessarily, two-door coupes or convertibles with two-passenger or 2+2 seating capacity.
They are distinguished from GT cars or sports cars by their greater emphasis on comfort and convenience than on performance, although the distinction between a luxury GT and a personal luxury car is often hazy.

While a luxury car is difficult to define as it is somewhat subjective, there are certain guidelines by which the luxury cars are defined.
In the car market of the new millennium, it has become rather difficult to determine whether a vehicle is indeed a luxury car or not.
The Lincoln Town Car, Cadillac DTS and Acura RL are all considered to be part of the mid-luxury segment due to their relatively low base MSPs despite their rank as a "flagship sedan" and high-end like interiors.

Not all car types are sold in all countries and names differ in some cases between British and American English.
The Muscle car is a peculiarly American type of sports car, popular from the 1960s until a combination of spiralling insurance costs and the 1973 energy crisis largely killed off the category.
Also known as people carriers, this class of cars resemble family cars but are taller with a shorter hood/bonnet and are designed for maximum practicality.

Muscle car   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Muscle Cars are high-performance automobiles made primarily in Detroit from 1964 to 1974.
Car manufacturers placed large V8 engines in mid-sized cars, giving them quite startling performance and setting off intense competition between manufacturers to produce the most powerful and extreme machine.
Power numbers generally hit their peak in 1970; the Chevelle SS 454 from that year is generally considered to have had the highest advertised output, producing 450 horsepower from a 454 cubic inch (7.4 Liter) engine.

AUTOMOTIVE MILEPOSTS | 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V Collector's Series
The new car buying public knew this would be the last year for large automobiles, and rushed to purchase one of the last ones, despite the fuel economy (or lack of).
The changing luxury car market--due in part to competition from the imports, the fuel crisis, and Cadillac's downsizing in 1977, all put Lincoln on the defensive in the late seventies.
The 1979 Mark V Collector's Series is Lincoln's supreme achievement, the pinnacle of American luxury car design that has its roots buried in the age when bigger was better, style was based on grand visions, and a powerful engine under the hood provided status and became part of the American dream.

It was one of the first American "personal luxury" cars, not quite a true sports car in performance and handling, but rather a two-place fast American- style touring car.
Over the years, the T-Bird remained a personal luxury car, in convertible or coupe form, but it grew larger, and less sporty.
Like a number of other concept cars that have made into production recently, demand is far greater than supply in the early stages of production, and anyone driving one is guaranteed to be the center of attention.

This new Ford, however, is something in between a sports car and luxury vehicle, with agile handling even in tight turns, but enough give in the suspension for comfortable everyday driving.
Objectively, the design of the T-Bird is actually fairly modern, with even fore/aft weight distribution, a large cockpit for a two-seater (there's much more shoulder and leg room here than in a Mazda Miata, BMW Z3 or Porsche Boxster) and reasonably short overhangs at the wheels.
But the hood scoop, egg-crate grille, and round tail lamps that grow out of the long shoulders of the car (which themselves ghost the tail fins of the original) all signal styling of a different era, though none of these cues is heavy-handed or awkwardly derivative.

The History of the Ford Thunderbird
Ford was not blind to Chevrolet's new car but chose to develop a car along a different path.
It was decided that their car would be made of metal instead of fiberglass; that it would be powered by a V-8 engine unlike the Corvette's "Blue Flame Six"; and that it would feature roll-down windows and an optional hardtop unlike the Corvette's snap on curtains.
"Personal Luxury" was the phrase coined by Ford to describe this approach and it sold well.
