Peruvian rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the military dictatorship of the late 60s and 70s, rock was outcast as an alienating phenomenon by the government of General Juan Velasco Alvarado in various ways: banning concerts in key venues, banning the import of "alienating and Yankee" American rock music, and even banning a highly anticipated Carlos Santana concert.
During the late 70s and early 80s, rock was confined to the underground scene; with no radio support and very few rock LPs to import, the then state of rock music, and the deep crisis that the country was suffering, Peruvian rockers looked for a way to channel their frustrations.
Amazingly, Peruvian TV and the Latin American division of MTV was quicker to notice and bring in Peruvian bands in their shows than the own Peruvian mainstream radio.

These rock art sites are present throughout almost the whole of the coastal valleys of the north and centre of the country, sometimes simply in the form of a few isolated engraved rocks, but more often by a predominat site, accompanied by smaller sites in relative proximity.
These rock images have been the subject, since the 16th century, of numerous mentions and refences, among which the most notable are those made by travelers and scientifics of the last century such as P. Desjardins, T. Huchinnson, E. Middenforff, A. Raimondi, G. Squier or C. Wiener.
One of the most important assemblages recognized in the past few years are the rock paintings and engravings discovered by a group of hunters at a place called the Quebrada “El Higuerón”, located in the valley of the río Chicama, 15 km from the village of Pampas de Mocan (province of Ascope).

With the arrival of the recording industry in Peru, the cajón was added to the instrumentation of the vals criollo, or "creole waltz", and in the 1970’s it was adopted in Spain for flamenco music as well as for popular music such as rock and fusion.

The cajón is now a national emblem for Peruvians, and an indispensable part of any ensemble that performs the traditional and folk music of Peru.

In 1969 Europe was witness of Progressive Rock’s birth, but in South America and especially in Perú (because Rock was almost illegal due to a Military Nationalist dictator), we were one step behind.
Psychedelia was something new, according to an ex hippy uncle who is my mentor in Peruvian Rock, the kids of the late 60’s had just left behind the first British Invasion and still most of the people was enjoying early Beatles, so "Virgin" is an advance for our (then) limited reality.
While their third and considered best album is very electric and close to Progressive Rock, “Virgin” is mostly an unplugged with some electric fugues.

They simply sound like an accomplished minor-league 1970 rock band with considerable progressive, psychedelic, and soul influences informing their original material.
