Pets are great because they are always there for you unconditionally.
The effectiveness of "Pet Sematary" doesn't lie so much in the images on the screen (although they do help to propel the story), but rather in the challenging question it asks of all of us: "Would you do the same thing that Louis did?" I know I would and that is scary.
In agreeing to make Pet Sematary into a movie, Stephen King demanded that it be filmed in his home state of Maine and that his screenplay be followed completely.

In the trivia section for Pet Sematary, it mentions that George Romero (director of two Stephen King stories, Creepshow and The Dark Half) was set to direct and then pulled out.
One wonders what he would've brought to the film, as the director Mary Lambert, while not really a bad director, doesn't really bring that much imagination to this adaptation of King's novel, of which he wrote the screenplay.
In terms of setting up some chilling set-pieces, only a couple really stand-out: a certain plot-thickening moment (not to spoil, it does involve a cool Ramones song), and the first visit to the pet sematary (the bigger one), including the sort of mystical overtones King had in the Shining.

Earlier on I said that this movie isn't as gory as some say; but Pet Semetary's sequel does have a distinct aura of unpleasantness about it at all times, and this becomes more potent given the fact that the story is centred on a couple of children.
The plot is slightly disjointed, but this actually works in it's favour as it makes the film less easy to predict and the way that it gets down to the conclusion that we know is coming right from the off is well worked.
On the whole, this is hardly great horror - but Pet Semetary 2 is better than you may expect and comes recommended to fans of the original.

The star of Pet Sematary 2 is the special effects work of Steve Johnson and company, who provide delights such as fake spew, nasty septic wounds, a cool eye gouge, acupuncture via power drill, faces half scraped away and melting, skinned rabbits (reminding me of Nekromantik) and an exploding head.
