Hyperchip and Nortel Networks Committed to Delivering Smarter Generation of Network Equipment - Nortel Networks' Open ...
By combining Open IP Environment with Hyperchip's petabit routing systems, we will provide that power and flexibility.'' Jeff Pickering, Open IP Environment engineering prime, Nortel Networks, said, ``Time to market is a critical component in the success of a product, but it is equally important to provide a full-featured solution.
Hyperchip's petabit routing architecture allows IP routing to scale from terabits to petabits per second of aggregate port bandwidth.
Hyperchip is the leader in petabit scalability for the WAN, and is driving the merger of the world's networks to provide end-to-end multi-gigabit connections between users, servers and storage, regardless of distance.

EETimes.com - Configurable CPU a boon in router design
Processor chips with poor code density and reduced features are now being pressed into service in embedded applications, and the programmer's job is to map the task at hand onto the fixed resources of a processor designed with extremely different trade-offs in mind.
In developing the core ASIC for the petabit router, Hyperchip determined that freezing all functionality into fixed logic would have cost several months of the design cycle, and would have exposed us to unacceptable design-change and standards-upgrade risks.
In the key petabit router ASIC, Hyperchip's main goals were to tie the accelerators together without performance bottlenecks, and to minimize the processor size so that we could fit one per transmitter, or 32 per chip.

(A petabit is a quadrillion bits, a one with 15 trailing zeros.) Computers that share one another's computing power across the network--what is called metacomputing--might require 200 petabits.
If these scenarios materialize--and, to be sure, people have been tapping their feet for virtual reality for more than a decade--the only transmission medium that could come close to meeting the seemingly infinite demand is optical fiber, the light pipes trumpeted in commercial interludes about the "pin drop" clarity of a connection.
To break that barrier, however, will require both fundamental breakthroughs and the deployment of technologies that are still more physics experiments than they are equipment ready to be slotted into the racks on nationwide phone and data networks.

Analysts said the point of having a petabit network is moot because routers do not support those speeds.
Although advertisement of a petabit network is hyperbole, there is no denying the thirst for bandwidth is unquenchable, said Joe Skorupa, director of core switching and routing at Ryan Hankin Kent, a San Francisco-based consulting firm.

I found this a bit interesting: a story on EE-Times shows a hyperchip switch (PBR-1280) capable of supporting Petabit speeds (10^15--a quadrillion--bits per second) in a stacked configuration.
Currently each individual chip is only capable of processing ~160 Gigabits/sec of traffic and they admit it will be a few years before the full Petabit speed is reached.
But it is a milestone, as they've been able to solve the technical issues previously preventing such speeds.

While some are just becoming familiar with the concept of terabit routing, a handful of vendors are beginning to consider petabit routers, which would offer speeds of 1,000,000,000,000,000 bps.
However, it is unclear how any company can be considering petabit speeds when terabit equipment is just emerging.
A market for petabit routing may not develop until 10 years from now, said Stephen Mullaney, Cisco Systems' product marketing director.
