  Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park in Sonoma County, California
Petaluma Adobe, preserved in Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park in Sonoma County, is one of the oldest preserved buildings in Northern California which was by all accounts the largest and richest privately owned Mexican estates north of San Francisco Bay and one of the most important in Alta California.
Authentic furniture and interpretive displays in Petaluma Adobe make it possible to visualize many aspects of life on Vallejo's sprawling rancho, but it should be remembered that the center of activity in this region during the 1830's and 40's was over the hills in the town of Sonoma.
In 1910 the Petaluma Adobe was purchased by the Petaluma Chapter of the Native Sons of the Golden West who managed to preserve the remaining half of the building until 1951.

A sea captain, John McNear, recognized the prime location of Petaluma for commerce on the navigable creek, and erected the first cement warehouse and began a small grain empire, which was expanded by his son, George.
The Petaluma Creek was upgraded to River by Act of Congress and signed by President Eisenhower on June 16, 1959.
The Petaluma Cooperative Creamery, established in 1913, is now part of a national conglomerate of milk producers, and cheeses, including goat cheese, is still manufactured in the area.

For 98 years, the waterway contributed to Petaluma's commercial success, making it at one time the ninth largest municipality and the third busiest inland port in California.
From the 1880s through the 1940s, Petaluma became famous as a poultry town and was known as the "World's Egg Basket." Petaluma was home to the world's only Chicken Pharmacy (as featured in National Geographic and Ripley's Believe It or Not).
In the 1950s, dairy farming and the charm of country living made Petaluma what it is today Dairy is still a principal industry now, along with a variety of specialty agricultural products, high tech industries including telecommunications, and tourism.

The Petaluma Chamber of Commerce hired Promoter Bert Kerrigan to capitalize on the chicken mania and he declared the town "The Egg Basket of the World".
The town helped launch a National Egg Day on Aug. 13, 1918, which in Petaluma was celebrated with a parade led by the Egg Queen and her court of attendant chicks, with events ranging from the Egg Queen Ball to a Chicken Rodeo.
The enormous prosperity in Petaluma sparked a spectacular building boom throughout the city, most of which can be seen to this day.

To an immigrant Canadian, Petaluma - the Miwok Indian word for "flat back" - appeared to be an ideal place for chicken farming; he imported white Leghorn chickens, and in 1878 invented the incubator.
Chicken farming reached its peak in 1920 when Petaluma, often called the egg-capital of the world, dispatched 22 million eggs.
Today there is nothing left of the chicken farms, even though the buildings of historic Petaluma have been amazingly well preserved, and its earlier importance as a river port for trade with San Francisco is still clear to see.

One of the more interesting cities to watch during the next decade will be the Sonoma County town of Petaluma, once known primarily for its egg and chicken production, but now acclaimed as one of the first cities in the country to adopt a form-based code.
The new restaurant (Graffiti, named in honor of the classic film American Graffiti that was shot in Petaluma) was being hailed as a major addition to the area months before its opening in summer, 2005.
As suggested at the outset, Petaluma’s downtown core is going to be a splendid area to track in future years since it already has significant inertia generated by the existing business district and the first few completed blocks in the Theatre District.
