  The Game & Rules
As a matter of fact, petanque evolved early this century from an old French bowl game (la boule Provencale), when one of the old champions, meanwhile suffering from arthritis and mourning his heydays, suggested there be no more running and jumping: everyone should throw the boules standing still, feet together, in a small starting circle.
Petanque balls are the size of an orange, hollow, and always made of metal.
Petanque can be played on almost any terrain; most players actually prefer an uneven terrain to make it more challenging.

In petanque the jack's size change between between 25 and 35 mm while in Bowls it is always the same size (63-64mm) and where Petanque jacks can be any color (even a earth color makes them impossible to see) the Bowls jack is white or Cream.
Also the petanque jack can be played anywhere where it falls as long as the distance is correct (with three efforts); in Bowls the jack is thrown once and always centered on the centre line of the playing green.
When the jack is touched in Petanque it is accepted in its new position and unless the jack is knocked out of the bounds at which time the end is finished and points only counted if one team doesnot have any balls in their hand.
